For those thinking about joining Jazz. Here is part of the pay scale to help with your decision. Multiply the hourly rate by ~80hrs/month. Add on another $1000/month in per diems.

Also consider the following YOS credit for the left seat. Copied from another post I made the other day

YOS FO Credit for CA
3 -> 1
4 -> 2
5 -> 3
6 -> 4
7 -> 5
8 -> 6

If unable to hold CA after 8 years you accrue an additional 2 years to a maximum of 8 YOS carry over to CA as a year 10 FO.

Pre 2015 it was 17. Then they stretched it out to 20.

Now it's back to 17, and the 18th year is an additional year added sometime in the future.

What should we do? Get our licence from Seneca college and apply to Jazz without gaining some experience before?

Jazz new-hire pay remains an embarrassment for a carrier that is evolving to fleet with an average gauge of 70+seats.

That is contrasted with the fact that the hiring demographic includes a significant component of “first commercial flying job” candidates.

Hopefully market forces will drive Jazz to improve entry level pay to meet future hiring demand in competition with many other second and third tier carriers chasing the same shrinking pool of candidates.

Even 5-10k. Bump it to 45k and I'd pretty much agree that with likely more and more college grads getting slots making it "entry level" would be fair.

For some reason carriers like Jazz and AC have decided that new-hire pilots should serve 4 years of indentured servitude prior to earning their ‘pay’ wings. Notwithstanding current rapid upgrade opportunities at both carriers (which will evaporate over time), these de facto 4 year apprenticeship pay scales are an abomination at 2 of Canada’s largest and longest tenured UNIONISED airline pilot groups.

I know both pilot groups have back stories as to the circumstances of these pay arrangements, but both need to prioritize eliminating this aberration in the industry. It is not replicated on any other union property.

While I do agree to a point I am glad that this round they chose to focus on years 6+ for those of us who plan to make Jazz a career. There first few years will fix themselves when and if a pilot shortage actually appears.

There’s a misconception floating around that Jazz’s new employees are predominantly 250 hr wonders..this is not true.


I know of many people who were in the well over 3000+ range with jet, 705, heavy turboprop or a combination all of the above who went over to Jazz. I wouldn’t call these pilots inexperienced drivers.

I asked about it, The way they explain the pay is you'll either be at AC in a few years or upgrade so the low pay doesn't really matter

Oh for sure most of the new hires are not college grads. I was just implying that it will be a growing trend for all regionals like Jazz. The long thread on the Jazz pilot pool proves lots of these guys have significant time.

If that's truly the case, you can understand why the company doesn't want to raise the wages. If they are still attracting people with time to come to Jazz and sit in the pool then they have no reason to increase it.

I gather the first place we'll see a "shortage" is in the ability to upgrade people, not getting them in the door.

I doubt even that. Even the 250's can get their 1500 and ATPL. Heck FO time doesn't even count as half anymore. You'll just see the pool dry up until jazz basically IS a cadet program. Though this new agreement leaving only 40% of slots to AC for ots will delay that.

Don't forget the PIC time requirements for the ATPL. Can't afford to rent the 172 on 37 grand a year. Can't upgrade or flow to AC without that ATPL.

It is not 40% OTS hiring for AC. The Skyregional pilots still have entitlements to a share of the “up to 80%” hiring commitment from AC for the Express group of pilot applicants to AC. I believe that EVAS has a small stake as well.

If there is an outcome that sees further Express consolidation, I would expect that the Jazz 60% criteria will have to rise to reflect that consolidation.

In a round about way I think we'll see more experienced people coming to Jazz now with the 60%. People who were waiting for OTS while flying 704 may find themselves waiting a long long time for a call. If AC is their goal, Jazz will become the defacto process to get there.

A number of college hires have all upgraded in the last 6 months after only just over two years at the company. PICUS is available if you can get it, and those with the foresight to realize their careers will fast track as soon as they have an ATPL will do what they can to get the time. Sky diving PT, LOA for three months to get PIC etc. There are ways, you just won't get it done sitting on your ass cruising along at Jazz. LOAs imo are the way to go. Anyone who needs pic time this summer should do that since we'll be overstaffed.

How will Jazz be overstaffed while sending 240+ pilots (0.6 x 400) to AC over the next 12 months plus adding 5 CRJ900’s prior to year end?
