Pilot shortage State side

Post by Freeport_Flyer »

Once someone figures out the whole immigration thing, I think US companies will wipe out most of the Canadian industry. Here's a link to Mesa Airlines (United / American tier 2 operator). Highlights, up to $50k in joining bonuses, Upgrade in 14-22 months, $36USD/hr to start, defined career path, jet aircraft...

File too big to upload, here's the link.

If you want to work in the US, Mesa should definitely not be your first choice.

Why not Mesa? Just curious. They have flow to United. Same with Envoy lower starting pay than some others but guaranteed flow to American (roughly 5 years they say right now)

They have a history of treating their pilots, and employees poorly. Many pilots have left there in a lateral move to Endeavour, SkyWest, etc.just to get out.

Just looked at the US immigration website. As far as I can surmise, unless you are a North American Indian, you don't qualify for a green card. That leaves sponsorship from a US spouse or family member, or sponsorship from an employer. Then wait 3-5 years as a legal resident before becoming a US citizen. Didn't see anything in the Mesa brochure about sponsorship.

Would be a nice option (sort of), but it seems a bit difficult for a Canadian to immigrate.

You can work as soon as you get that green card. Who cares about citizenship. My brother has been down there 9 years+ now. Been on the green card the whole time no issues

Canadians are not eligible for the green card lottery. Just checked. Just about everyone else is.

So that means your brother was sponsored by somebody, employer, spouse or family member?

Father moved down with wife and two brothers. I however was no longer a minor and therefore not eligible.

If they run out of pilots it'll be interesting to see if they try to use the special talent style visa to get people in. I don't think this will happen any time soon.

If you compare what the US regionals have on offer compared to the Canadian operators it seems they are taking a pilot shortage a little more seriously. Those are some pretty substantial incentives. There are even airline sponsored programs out there taking military helicopter drivers and converting them over to fixed-wing multi guys to fill seats.

Time will tell how bad the shortage actually is. Are there any Canadian operators dropping flights due to crewing? I know Emirates has airplanes parked due to lack of bodies.

In my previous career (software engineering) there were always recruiters messaging me for opportunities in the States. It seems they have no problem sponsoring engineers for visas as there is a shortage. Hopefully pilots get added to that list in the near future.

Don’t let those bonuses fool you. Jazz is the best regional airline in North America. I know this to be true because all the Jazz guys on avCanada tell me so.

Company's last 2 quarterly statements said slowing global demand for shipments. Less shipping very likely means fewer aircraft needed.

Global shipping slowing? Not on this planet.

Reasons for FedEx's revenue issues are because of Amazon Air.
From what I've read, conditions and salaries are substandard at Amazon/Atlas, which supports their undercutting. I have no sources other than articles however.

I saw some of those.

Also what's incredible is that their "substandard wages" are better than ours in general.
