Flight training cost

Post by Bede »

I've been out of the FTU scene for some time, but does $379/hr for a DA20 seem a tad high? I would have thought half that amount would be on the high side for the going rate.

Wow. $700 / Hr for their twin.

Ching - Ching.

So I read the fine print. Add another $79 / hr for dual flights to that $379 DA 20 figure!

Ballsy.

30 minute discovery flight:

$300 bucks. Payable in advance.

I can't decide if that's zero, one, or two racist slurs in one post. What leads you to your conclusion?

Ching Ching. As In a cash register...........

I don't do racism. I can read, and analyze, however, just fine.

Ok, zero racist slurs then. Glad to hear it.

But why do you think the owners are Chinese?

I'm assuming it's a genuine question?

Read the site careful. The English construction. And huge site page for foreign students. The expensive pricing. Draw your own conclusions.

My best friend is part Chinese....FWIW.....I've had loads of exposure to the culture.

Might be the web designer but I doubt it somehow.

I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about a writer’s ethnic background from their grammar ;-)

I am a bit surprised they did not charge a fee for seat selection.

Calgary Flight has always been on the high side price-wise, though it seems they're really jumping the shark now. Oddly enough, they're also one of the worst paying for instructors. They're not Chinese owned... yet. AFAIK they're still owned by the mysterious Dr. Deegan.

I'm not sure what's more depressing: That everyone has a price, or how low the price always is.

They do, it's seat 0A you're paying to select, it's the most expensive one in the plane!

The crazy part is that they actually have buisness. I considered going there for an instructor rating just because their class 1 was available. They were short on instructors and offered me a job after training completion which seemed great but that was completely thrown out the window once i found out about the price

Im guessing they're able to get away with this because every other school has a waiting list. But hey, capitalism

Wow... $7282 for a multi-rating and $17,198 for the multi-instrument rating? $699 an hour! At least their Comanche looks pretty nicely equipped.

$379 per hour to fly a goofy little DA20-C1? That's alarming.. that's about what I paid per hour to fly the Seminole when I did my training two years ago. Mind you, I had a staff discount, but still.

When I finished my instructor rating, I skipped the multi stuff and just started instructing. Later, I did my Multi and Group 1 back-to-back, using the flight-school's discount staff rental rate, plus a friend taught me. I had both done for less than $4500 total... that's over $3000 cheaper than just their multi rating!

No wonder there's fewer and fewer domestic pilots. Who can afford to do it all in one go unless your parents have deep pockets or you've got the credit rating of Bill Gates.

Well, rich and stupid is actually a pretty good marketing demographic if you can penetrate the market and it is large enough.
No one know exactly what you get for the $700 admin fee? I love that. Unless someone can explain different, it is just a made up $700 fee. Someone had to ask, didn’t they?

Seriously, I think if they can get those prices they should be able to do a first rate job of providing instruction.....top notch instructors, facilities, training aids...
Or just be rippping students off. Time will tell.

Wow is right, that means I would have had to pay $1456.40 per hour for my multi engine rating.

When I learned to fly the hourly cost was ten dollars an hour dual and eight dollars an hour solo on the Cessna 140A and the Fleet Canuck.

I inquired about possbility to fly with them last winter and was told that I could put my name on their waiting list ... and wait for about 2 years!!
