Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ

I don't know who ran into who, but I've seen airport vehicles ripping around the ramp with basically no care at all in YYZ, especially late at night.

From the angle in the video I'd say the truck backed into the passing dash. Or he was going super fast forward and did a swerving power slide into it. My money is on the truck causing it though. Worked that ramp, and I agree vehicles just go whipping around it.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
"According to Peel Regional Police Sgt. Bancroft Wright, the tanker truck struck the plane and the driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle under the federal Aviation Act.
"The plane was pretty much written off," Wright told CBC Toronto.
The pilot, co-pilot, a flight attendant and two passengers were treated for injuries, according to Wright."

Jazz taxing to fast. If they'd taxi at 7 kts or less like I do it wouldn't have happen. No different than the Toronto yahoos going 100 km/hr on 401. Cut speed to 50 and be less accidents and lower insurance premiums.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
Truck T boned the plane and it spun around hit the prop and then the baggage door area.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
If you've ever held an AVOP (airside vehicle operators permit), you'd know that aircraft always have the right-of-way. The taxi speed of an aircraft is not relevant in this context. The vehicle must ALWAYS give way to an aircraft that is moving. If a vehicle hits a plane it is pretty much always the fault of the vehicle operator.Roadrunnersmother wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2019 7:33 amJazz taxing to fast. holy F**K that would be one scary situation as a pilot especially if you knew it was a fuel truck.

Yeah taxi at 7 knots in YYZ...You'll get a nice little time out on the deicing pad lol
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
Sweet Jesus,
How in the world do you collide with the front of the aircraft, swing around missing the prop and wing and hit the tail. The one picture makes it look like the truck hit the plane, backed up around the plane and went to far and struck it again....
Hope the crew is doing well, based on the one picture if I was the Captain i'd be pretty shaken up.

It didn't miss the prop. All 4 blades on the number 1 engine are damaged.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
The plane swung around that’s what I was told. The fuel bowser probably weighed twice as much as the plane. Baggage door area is smashed pretty bad too. Damn lucky there wasn’t a fire.flyinhigh wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2019 8:19 am Sweet Jesus,

I have 10 bucks on texting and driving, I see it all the time! Anyone taxing at 7 kts, except in a 90 degree turn, should be sh*t.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
From the CBC:
“It was at that point that the evacuation began. Passengers were forced to jump from the plane onto the tarmac below. Frontczak said the process was somewhat chaotic.”
I’m not familiar with the Dash, but it has no slides, I guess? Even little ones?

I had a guy pick up his phone while pushing my plane back once. These companies want to pay minimum wage: They get minimum wage quality.Stu Pidasso wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2019 9:21 am I have 10 bucks on texting and driving, I see it all the time! Sorry AME S license holders, you're being replaced with police officers."The plane was pretty much written off," Peel Regional Police Sgt. Bancroft Wright told CBC News.
Will fix airplanes for food.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
7 knots, 37 knots... It's the Captains right to determine a safe and appropriate taxi speed relevant conditions and other factors...
Maybe gate not yet available, middle of the night so traffic impedance us not a factor at that time, maybe tired after long day and diversion, maybe a new Captain, lots of those these days, maybe uncertain on the taxi route... or maybe just padding some block growth... take it slow... it's your operation to manage...
I've never been given a hard time about the speed I choose to taxi at to best safely accommodate my needs.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
No airline I have worked at has said it is the Captain's right to taxi at any speed they want.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
They certainly don't tell you what taxi speed to use though. It's your responsibility to use your judgement.appropriate taxi speed relevant conditions and other factors
Have you never done a slow taxi because stoc said your crew/gate wasn't available? Or a complicated taxi route? Or you got a rwy change after pushback and the FO is inputting the new performance/sid into the box? Or you're on a ramp?
Saying a crew should be shot or given a time out on the deice pad for taxing slow is inappropriate....

Better pics on CBC.

They were T-boned. Whoever was in the left seat got a pretty good bang.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 and Menzies Fuel Truck Collide in YYZ
Will they do cannabis testing on the driver for an accident like this? I don't think it's related to the crash but I'm just curious if they are cracking down on it below the wing as much as they do above it.
