bilirubins/baby yellow/Jaundice

Post by cyyz »

Story(if you want to skip it move to paragraph 4)

So 5 years ago I went to the doc(not the CAME) for my physical and blood test. Get a call a week later Low Hemoglobin. So I take iron for a year..

4,3,2,1 years pass by I stopped taking the iron 'cause hemo came back normal. Last week I get a call saying my billies are high..

Today went for a retest. Took 6 tubes from me today.. LoL, I was told to actually wait 15 minutes before leaving.. They did an HIV, Hep tests, AST, GET and one more thing. "don't worry standard procedure" rofl. What am I, a walking apocolypse to happen?

Help? So my bilirubins are high but from what I found on the net they're a byproduct of hemoglobin which was once low. So how would I have more now of something that I didn't have before?

Secondly.. I can't find anything on the net that would state wth they're for and why having too many would be so bad.

All I could find is that babies go under lamps when they're born if it's too high 'cause it can be neurotoxic. and a horse got dreary eyed from them.

Would flying have had anything to do with this? Why would it take 3 1/2 years for it to go from low in iron, flying and finally high billies?

Should I be worried?

PS. farkin damn arses. I said you want a stool sample oh no, don't worry.. bilirubins = liver = urine.. arghh.. I hate doctors..

So yeah, any thoughts comments opinions greatly appreciated..

PSS, oh and since big brother is watching, this really just happened to a friend of mine.

Since I don't want you to haunt me on your death bed or otherwise .... why not ask your Doc. these very same questions? The questions really do require "expert" input. If you are concerned that by speaking to your Doc, your Cat I statues might be affected, there are firms or other websites that might assist you. Actually I found it rather refreshing that some of the folks who use this Board did not reply, usually not knowing anything about a topic doesn't seem to be criteria for response.

So .... how are you now?

Well my family doc didn't call me back, so I just poped in and he said all the test came back negative(no hep, no HIV, etc)..

Just found it odd for 1/3 of my life I can be low on Iron and then all of a sudden have too much iron.

The doc wasn't very fourth comming with information. All he said is he has patients that have high billirubins but are very "healthy."

high bilirubins = jaundice imo.. So I'd be yellow or atleast that's what the joke was in the Pianist.. But how could I be "healthy" and yet have something that isn't "normal."

exactly, that's why I asked the board, want to know how a "healthy" person could be deemed "unhealthy" for his CATI.

I don't report anything to my CAME, and I keep my profession from my Family Doctor so that way I usually stay "safe."

Ah, well, we'll see what the doc says on my medical in 2 months if he finds anything abnormal..

Well that would be a good explanation as to how one could contract HIV/Hep and then Jaundice.. But that wasn't the case, just odd, one year something is wrong one side of the spectrum and the next year it's reversed.. Ah well.

But, yeah, I'm fine, healthy, high bilirubin until my next years physical when they'll find something else out of tune. We'll see how my aviation medical goes. =)

Maybe in a year, I'll be able to throw in an FA story. ;-)

Just some quick websites that I found. In adults it can be a test for liver disorders such as cirrhosis.
I have always maintained that if you don't get the anwers that you want from one doctor go see another. Ask around to your friends to see if they can recommend a doc they trust. You only get one trip through life and it is up to you to make the most of it.
I am surprised that all you mentioned were blood tests. Their are many reasons for low hemaglobin that would not be diagnosed with a simple blood test. Check back into your family history as well, it might be something that you are genetically predisposed to.

Thanks bandaid and everyone else...

I'll look into it. But the old "hear no evil see no evil/ignorance is bliss" concept may be a deadly one but I'd rather be living life to it's fullest instead of knowing my "future," atleast sometimes..

But, I'll look into it. Paranoia can get to you at one point or another..

Kind Regards,

Hi cyyz,

My doctors once, called me for this also. A high level og bilirubine. So I when I went to my CAT 1 examination, with CAME, he asked me why my urine was so dark and I told him that I had Gilbert Syndrome, wich consist of a high level of bilirubin in the blood. He did not ask me other things about that and he has not mentionned it in the report for TC. I still have my CAT 1 medical and still flying.

you can take a look at this
