Re: 787 Pilots
It's basic English language skills. Between the redundancy and the ending of a sentence with a preposition, I wonder who the master of the English language really is?
Just to be clear, it's the redundancy, saying "behind" twice, I have issue with.
I'm not saying it that way, it makes less sense than just a clear readback.
I readback the clearance and the condition.

Reading it back the way you're supposed to IS the clearest way. No one really cares what you think about who's the "master of the English language" or what you "believe is superfluous" or other such irrelevant nonsense.
The redundancy is by design, to mitigate the increased risk of such a conditional clearance, hence the last word is repeated as the most important one - "BEHIND".
But hey, you be you.
Just another North American pilot everyone rolls their eyes at on the radio.
Oh, and guys, you don't need to tell every Shannon and London controller you're CPDLC every time you check in, they know.
I’m still waiting for my white male privilege membership card. Must have gotten lost in the mail.

Well, at least you're honest - that DOES at least explain a few things we hear from my beloved fellow North Americans!

Thank you! This one's a personal pet peeve.complexintentions wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2019 7:04 am Oh, and guys, you don't need to tell every Shannon and London controller you're CPDLC every time you check in, they know.
The only people that you need to say "CPDLC" to are non-radar guys (i.e. oceanic. Shanwick, Gander Radio etc)
If they have you on radar, they already know.
Rant over! That felt good
Re: 787 Pilots
That's funny Tango Niner since there is no requirement to tell Gander or Shanwick radio that you are CPDLC since they already know.
CPDLC isn't something that shows up on radar, it's something included in your flight plan.

Re: 787 Pilots
You used to have to say it with the oceanic check in... maybe 4 or 5 years ago it changed...
Re: 787 Pilots
You think we don't roll eyes at some Europeans? Especially when they have engine fires on take off on the West coast and still elect to continue to the UK. Actually, we don't roll our eyes, we usually just say WTF!!!!!!?complexintentions wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2019 7:04 am

I hear more Europeans and Asians say this than North Americans.complexintentions wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2019 7:04 am Oh, and guys, you don't need to tell every Shannon and London controller you're CPDLC every time you check in, they know.

Engine was shut down after a surge. Not a fire.
There are no restrictions on 3 Engine flight with a 4 Engine aircraft - it's different than a twin. There is no requirement to land at the nearest suitable airport.
One variant of the Type I fly will actually fly further on 3 Engines. If you're not too heavy the aircraft will even maintain current altitude and speed.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find in this business
Re: 787 Pilots
Yet 2 days ago... Shanwick came back with Confirm CPDLC ? So l will go back to bug others and just keep telling Shanwick and Gander Oceanic on initial contact that I'm CPDLC.

Re: 787 Pilots
IIRC, the calculations and restrictions are based on a one-engine out scenario. With a twin, you're losing half of your thrust, whereas with a quad, you're only losing a quarter.Eric Janson wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2019 9:22 pmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_A ... Flight_268

Re: 787 Pilots
With you there Benwa. The first time I *didn't* say CPDLC to an oceanic guy, he wanted confirmation of same.
Re: 787 Pilots
Sometimes it's just fun to mess with Gander... the grumpiest controllers on the face of the planet!
Re: 787 Pilots
Grooming is over. It's done. On all aircraft unless you're a minion koolaide drinker try hard.
