Category 1 Medical - Vision Question

Post by shawnthesheep »

Hello all,

Does anyone know if they are strict about this? I'll be going in for my 3rd cat 1 medical renewal and probably can't read the last letter now. (Without correction) I have heard from people in the industry that they don't enforce it. But why is it still in the CARs..?

(b) the applicant possesses a visual acuity without correction in each eye separately, not less than 6/60 (20/200) and the refractive error falls within the range of ± 3.0 diopters (equivalent spherical error);

No need to worry at all. I personally have the worst (probably) uncorrected vision out of all CAT 1 holders in Canada, and I have held a CAT 1 for 9 years.

My diopter error is -14. I basically need to be right next to the chart to even read the BIG E without my glasses. You should see my glasses, they are thick!

What will most likely happen is your medical examiner (Local or regional manager) “may” request you obtain a report from an ophthalmologist. This special eye doctor will take a look at your retinas to make sure everything looks stable. Sometimes small litlle tears develop in the retinas of those patients with high myopia. If these tears are left untreated, you could “potentially” have a retinal detachment and go blind. Worry not though! I have personally had a few tears and all the doctor does is laser the tear, to prevent a possible detachment. This is a completely different type of laser when compared to lasik. This laser does not affect your vision, and once the dilated drops wear off (Normally a few hours) you are good to go! This is actually a very common procedure.

As long as I do regular check ups (6-12 months), I have no issues maintaining a CAT1.

If that examination looks good, and you can still see atleast 20/25 with glasses you will have no problem.
