Decent places to live in Vancouver area near transit to YVR?
Will be new to Vancouver and as the title says looking for an okay neighborhood with walking distance amenities and relatively quick access to YVR. Would like to have access to a large park or the waterfront.
I was looking at Yaletown and Richmond but I really have no idea what those places are like.
Probably just rent a 1-2 bedroom apartment for a year or two before I figure out my next move.

go for a place walking distance to yaletown skytrain station. Downtown has everything. Best location in YVR in my opinion. 20min to YVR and you dont need to worry about a car or parking, cant beat that.

Olympic Village'd do in a pinch as well—pretty much everything you want. I lived near Broadway/City Hall for a while a few years ago and while pricey, was a very nice, family oriented area. Might be a bit slow if you're single and adventurous.
Have a crash pad in Richmond now. Would not recommend.

Anywhere along Broadway st will get you to Broadway-City Hall station quickly as it’s a main artery of the city with a bus coming every couple minutes. I live between oak and Granville st and it’s a great area.

Steveston. By the water, easy commute to YVR and it’s got a great vibe.

I'd look for a place around Mount Pleasant or Main Street... roughly between the Main and Cambie corridors, and between approx False Creek/2nd Ave and 33rd Ave. Easy walk over to the train to YVR, lots of amenities, lots of parks, better neighborhood vibe, easy to get downtown and other parts of the city.
Steveston? Sure, if you're moving with a family and kids maybe. Along the dyke is a great place and community for kids growing up... but apart from O'Hares and good fish and chips it's mostly touristy stuff and pretty suburban... Nikka is gone, Rod's Lumber is gone, I think Steveston Hardware is closed now... Richmond in general doesn't offer much except proximity to YVR... shiity traffic to Vancouver, lacking transit unless you're right at Richmond Centre, and who wants to be there? A couple malls, some interesting "new" Chinese markets, but it's mostly novel for a guy like me, go to the food fair, been there done that, not looking at that for where I live...
Stick to Vancouver proper, you'll enjoy your YVR experience more.

As much as Richmond is convenient, I would avoid it like the plague. A horrible community & vibe in my opinion...

Disagree. Apartment rents are much lower than anywhere closer to downtown, including Marpole, Kerrisdale and Yaletown. Lots of shopping places, including all the major box stores and chain outlets, and great Asian food in abundance. New York Times article stated that Richmond has the best Chinese food in the whole world, including Beijing and Shanghai. I agree. Bike paths galore, and the ground is as flat as a pancake all the way from Bridgeport to Steveston.groundpilot wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 4:44 pm As much as Richmond is convenient, I would avoid it like the plague. 24 minutes to downtown on the Skytrain. The Canada Line has a space on each car (2 cars per train) giving priority to cyclists. I rarely drive downtown; instead I ride my Cruiser bike and take the Skytrain to Vancouver Centre station.
Leave your car, if you have one, in your apartment block and take the Skytrain to the airport. 6 Minutes from Bridgeport, 12 minutes from Lansdowne. Great bus service, as well, from Bridgeport station. And easy to go south or east on the freeways, providing that you avoid rush hours in the tunnel or on the Alex Fraser bridge. 35 minutes by car to to go to Point Roberts and/or Tsawwassen, 45 Minutes to Blaine.

Agree, like living in Brampton. Wouldn't live there if it was free. Even though it has great "shopping, buses, and Asian food". For an extra couple hundred you live downtown. You can even ditch the car. No need to commute or bus or sky train just to leave the house. I step outside to downtown and the seawall. Cant beat that.groundpilot wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 4:44 pm As much as Richmond is convenient, I would avoid it like the plague. A horrible community & vibe in my opinion...

You get what you pay for...and the reason Richmond is cheap is because it sucks. It's not because there isnt money there. Just look around and read a few stories about the River Rock Casino. It is by far, the worst community I have ever lived in.Raymond Hall wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2019 2:32 pmDisagree. Spend the few extra hundred bucks and get away from that place. Dont worry - lots of asian food in all of Vancouver and Skytrain right to work...

Thank you all for your input. Seems like the Mt. Pleasant/Broadway area had the most support, Yaletown is a potentially good option, and Richmond depends on the person. I'll be sure to check them all out for myself.
