Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
My Android is an older version that fortunately does not support these alerts
My wife's phone had a setting which was hard to find that allowed me to turn off all of these pushed alerts.
I wouldn't mind keeping an eye open for an alert I received if it were to be in a non-obnoxious format. I don't need to be woken up at any hour of the night as I'm not going to be any help anyway if I am sleeping. However, just like flying and listening to 121.5 on my second radio I'd keep my eyes open on the highway. Unfortunately, I had to opt to disable these alerts altogether for the annoyance factor. As a member of CASARA - I choose to keep my phone on at night.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Am I the only one in all of Canada that went to settings, emergency alerts, amber alerts, silent? I still get the amber alerts, but my phone just vibrates. No nuclear siren. Steve confused by this whole issue.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
I've also put the notifications for them to silent on my S10. Easy peasy.
When I get up in the morning the first thing I see is the type of car and where they might be going. I'll keep an eye out. But there is literally zero point to me getting the info in the middle of the night because, since I'm asleep, I won't be looking out my window in my quiet Ottawa crescent taking down license plates. Just reality.

I think the settings are dependent on the version of Android your device runs. No "silent" on my wife's phone but I could turn them off completely.

I have mine on silent but I still get them
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Why am I forced to choose between possibly being woken up at night and thus working fatigued the next day, and being available for a family emergency call I could possibly do something about?
For those who think it is as simple as turning the alerts off... this thread wouldn’t be at 3 pages if it were that simple. You cannot turn the alerts off or selectively silence them, at least on some phones. That is the whole problem and why this system is so awful.

Get rid of your celphone and get a landline. People lived that way for a very long time. I know for a millennial its daunting just to imagine doing so, but "Flight Safety" depends on it!
These phones are far more dangerous in the hands of pilots who using them to listen to music and text while flying, then losing a few minutes of beauty sleep once or twice a month.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Thanks for the absurd “solution” but I have no use for a landline. I got rid of my telegram machine as well, years ago.
How about we solve the problem instead of coming up with ridiculous workarounds?

Not anywhere near millennial age and (thankfully) got rid of my landline 15 years ago...I love generalizations.

Jeez, hope you've never tuned ADF #2 to a local AM station and had a listen... surely you'd spiral into the ground being unable to recognize an engine failure because of that damn music.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Too bad. Being a millenial would have given you a reason for being such a whiny, drama queen.

It's probably easy to say that if it was your kid, you wouldn't want to wake up half the province to let them know, until it is your kid.
I don't mind the alert though, I've endured worse things in life. I do notice it's a constant thing in Ontario, and almost rarely happens in the west where I reside so I haven't got any issues. That being said I can see why it can be a little overwhelming for some, but there are ways, as people mentioned here (manipulating your notifications, if possible, is the most viable one it seems).

I missed a page of this thread but in case it wasn’t brought up, there is a way for iPhone users to disable the alerts, sort of, you disable LTE and use 3G, the alerts won’t come through but your phone still works.
I haven’t tried it but here it is just the same.
For what it’s worth, I just look at my phone, realize there’s nothing I can do and go back to sleep, usually after a trip to the bathroom, yes I’m that old!

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
So who got woken up by the Nuclear alert? Seems like it was just sent in error.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
I think if I was about to be in big trouble for a near nuclear disaster down in sector 7G that I too would try to play the warning off as an error.Daniel Cooper wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2020 10:06 am So who got woken up by the Nuclear alert? Seems like it was just sent in error.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
I would think that too if the people running this emergency alert system weren't so incompetent.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
And with every message sent in error, the effectiveness of the actual system reduces drastically.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
The concept is great but the system is not. In my case there are just too many irrelevant alerts to the point of being ignored. This was the highest priority alert, prezidential, but living 1800 km from the source still is just useless information and not an immediate treat. I would much prefer to get the details via the news than roll over and turn off my phone. They need to fine tune the system so people don't start to ignore the alerts or as I have done for now is disable the app, not just turn off the warnings which can be overridden but actually remove it. They need to select appropriate areas not just a blind open transmission.

Turn airplane mode on your phone at night.
Then wiifi back on if you need that...
Or if you need to be able to receive calls, just turn the data off on your phone at night.
Done.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
I do not think the alert is sent over "data".
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
It's not a phone call or text message...
You have to be connected to LTE (4G).
No data = no LTE = good night's sleep.
