Would DeHavilland Canada restart Dash 8 300 production?
Interesting comments towards the end of the article from De Havilland Canada Chief Operating Officer Todd Young about interest in a 50 seater again.

They might, given enough interest/orders. ATR needs some modern competition. FADEC, maybe some more power, modern avionics, aerodynamic tweaks for some better fuel burn.
Call it the Dash 8-320
How hard would it to be to make the -200 series on the same assembly line? Just make the fuselage a bit shorter. The rest can stay the same.

Would it be easier to modernize the 300 or just shorten the -400?
Re: Would DeHavilland Canada restart Dash 8 300 production?
I’d imagine use everything except the avionics from a 300 and throw in the 400 avionics and fadec control. Maybe take the PW124’s or 127’s and toss them in a 300PostmasterGeneral wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 8:13 pm Would it be easier to modernize the 300 or just shorten the -400?

PW127s would give some nice jam. Help a bit with short runways like Perimeter and such fly into. Maybe EIC could even form a leasing company for their airlines and be the launch customer!
I'm sure Jazz would be interested in some too if fuel trucks keep smashing into their planes.

These are supposed to be efficient aircraft so a 400 with 50 seats full should be making lots of money, why would you go through so much cost to reduce the number of seats by retro fitting first an old aircraft or modify to a smaller 400 -- better still get ride of all turbo props off route more than 1.5 hours long. "long haul" dash 8 or ATR , how painful is that!!!!

Take the 200 and 300, throw some new avionics, the newer NVS from the Q400, the engine/prop combo from the new ATR's, and a APU that isn't a POS.
Could probably certify with at least another 1000 lb gross weight increase, and do 300 ktas all day.

Just take a few sections out of the 400. Same engine wing prop etc. Derate the engines and bobs your uncle. Probably 95%+ parts commonality and if it’s as similar to the Q flight crews might be able to hope from one to another.

I believe it's not that simple. It would need to be certified and that's mega bucks, let alone the retooling. It's an "old" aircraft brought into production almost 20 years ago and in development for multiple years prior to that. For the most part it is not the aircraft for the job that Canadian carriers are using it for. They have become popular here because initially they were cheap to buy or lease because there was a surplus due to carriers parking them.
