Regional Career
Just had a thought come up the other day of staying at the regionals for the rest of my career.
I understand the main debate of going to a mainline gig would be higher earnings in the long run and flying bigger aircraft.
But my priority in life is in the following order.
1) Family
2) Health
3) Pay
My 2 main reasons to stay at a regional would be a good seniority which means better family time spent. Also, earning between $100-160k as a skipper. I’ve already convinced myself of this route. I understand everyone is different and your priority order is different from the above. No judgment from me.
I have 3 questions for those decided to stay at a regionals. For ex: Jazz
1) Why did you decide to stay?
2) How is your work life balance?
3) Have any regrets of not going to the other side?

The only way to have ‘career’ is to also have job security.
Ask yourself if you truly have that (30-45 years) at any regional airline.

There is no real job security in my observation. Your airline could go bankrupt, you could be on layed off.

There is no way your first priority in life is family or lifestyle. Your first youtube video was about how much money you made in one month, which was boosted as hell by the way.
I think you are telling yourself staying is good, maybe you got a pfo and are debating not trying again and be junior to all your buddies.

How many bankruptcies has AC been through in 40 years? Nobody has 40 years of job security in aviation, nobody.
#1 seniority guy at Sky service wasn't helped by seniority, but by employability. Point being that job security is defined more by employability than by which company you fly for.

I’m 34 years old. I decided to spend my career as a regional pilot.
The seniority that I would give up by going to a mainline carrier is not worth the extra money in my bank account. That extra money is basically just used to live in the expensive cities where mainline airlines are based. I have no desire to commute for a big shiny jet.
Don’t people say “enjoy the journey”. When you retire what would you rather have. A 777/787 in your logbook or being with family for all the special occasions that you would of missed by being junior for a long time at a mainline carrier. I would prefer to watch my son grow up then hear it from my wife because I was gone. That argument of wide bodies pilots work 9-12 days a month the rest they are home. How tired are you when you are at home? How bad is the time zone shift and radiation on your health.
Yes. A regional pilot doesn’t get the “glamorous” overnights. In the end a hotel is a hotel. If I need to be home for any reason I’m not halfway around the world. And with seniority getting better. In my 50’s I’ll be holding single day trips and home every night. With all the vacation/days off I want.
I came to the regionals thinking my end goal is mainline.
That end goal has changed. Regional for life for me.

There are two guarantees in life - death and taxes.
A plane goes up and down and goes faster than the other and slower than another.
I salute any man or woman in aviation who is at peace and is content with what they have. They'd be the ones I would want to fly with in the cockpit VS the person who complains all the time. In aviation the former are few and far between.
If we don't get what we always wanted, we need to take a step back and appreciate what we already have. It'll save you a lot of grief and misery.

Someone once said the mainline thing was basically the same job for more money. Less days worked, less legs, for more money. Layover in bigger cities. Same view out the front.
However there are little to no single-dayers and more jetlag potential at a mainline carrier. So if those are important factors stay away.
Job security is a bit of a crapshoot.
To each their own, many people got into this career knowing full well if that if they went mainline they’d be away from home for a few days sometimes, be tired and jetlagged a lot. But they pay you a lot for it. Nature of the beast. It doesn’t work out well for all families. Some it does.
