Have you ever flown with Durian

Post by pelmet »

We had a Supplemental Procedure of more than one aircraft for...…

HANDLING STRONG SMELLING CARGO IN LOWER LOBE CARGO COMPARTMENT. In it was the statement of...…
"Cargo such as durian will be containerized when feasible, or covered and sealed with plastic wrap."

Basically, the procedure is to turn the recirc fans and cargo heat off. Now I see why there is such a procedure.....

"C-GEOQ, a Boeing 767-375 operated by Air Canada Rouge, was conducting flight ROU1566 from
Vancouver Intl (CYVR), BC to Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl (CYUL), QC with 8 crew
members and 245 passengers on board. On the initial climb at approximately 7000 feet ASL, the
flight and cabin crew noticed a strong odour throughout the aircraft. The flight crew attempted to
clear the odour however with no success. The flight crew requested to level off at FL250 to
troubleshoot the issue. Subsequently, the crew declared a PAN PAN, donned their oxygen masks
and returned to land in CYVR without further incident.
It was discovered that the cause of the strong odour was a shipment of Durian fruit in the forward
cargo compartment. The fruit shipment was removed and the aircraft was returned to service."

No idea if this crew was told about their cargo load. But if you are.....

While it probably should be, I don’t think Durian is classified as a dangerous good.

Durian was used as an additive to ice cream while I was flying in Indonesia.
No accounting for some tastes....

Some Airlines prohibit the carriage of Durian due to the strong smell.

Durian is an acquired taste.

I've read that there's a specific gene that enables an individual to smell a particularly yucky aromatic ester in brussels sprouts. People without this gene don't find them as gross as people with the gene.

I wonder if the same applies for Durian.

Huh, what is the preferred way to serve the stuff besides adding it to ice cream?

Wife eats it straight, or in ice cream, or bubble tea, or durian candies.....

I don't mind the bubble tea or candies. The ice cream doesn't feel...cold like a good chocolate etc. More like a pudding then the fruit itself...ugh but that's it's texture like mushed banana.

Never flew with it but back in the day CP had fire alarms set off by Durian and of course passenger complaints re the small. Procedures were put in place to ensure the Durian was wrapped etc so as to prevent the escape of the fumes, the smell and the humidity. The problems were solved and the cargo continued to be flown That was 30 plus years ago. Amazing that the industry is still having problems.
