$100 burgers and $500 golf.... in the prairies

Post by ws2000 »

This used to be free...http://www.100dollarhamburger.com/... I can't recall the url to the golf one, but neither had an overly impressive amount of Canadian content.

I'm needing to build time x-country pic time and rather than flying to somewhere for nothing more than a touch and go, I'd rather find some interesting to do. COPA has a bit of a list of places to fly, but it takes a while to weed through them...

So I was hoping to find some suggestions on little airports in AB, SK and MB that have are in very close proximity to the town(ie. food) and/or golfing. By close proximity, I mean close enough to walk, as most small towns have neither a crew car nor a taxi company...

To get the list rolling, I know of....

Vulcan, AB - close golf
Okotoks, AB - close golf
Carlyle, SK - close food
Candle Lake, SK - golf/food are a mile or so, but resort town = easy to find rides
Russell, MB - close food

Airdrie, AB - a little too far to walk, but there's local taxi cab companies. See http://www.accota.ca

Not sure if you want mountain flying but Golden is a great place to fly into. Short 5-10 min walk to town. Rwy right beside the river.

Vernon B.C. is totally awsome. Always some airplane nut out there polishing or what ever to his pride and joy and will give you a short ride to eateries, if you can stop talking airplanes long enough.

Kelowna,
A 5 minute ride to 2 golf courses, one designed by Les Ferber and the other, well, not, but it is a great golf course none the less. Last time I put a link to a golf course here I ended up in trouble with Avcanada so just do a google on okanagan golf club.

Of couse we cannot forget Nanaimo. A pretty little city with a nice airport and you can walk to the south end of the field and find none other than our beloved Cat Driver. I have spent a couple of afternoons bullshitting and visiting with . when I did the freight run with a Navajo out of YVR and that is worth the trans oceanic hop over to YCD just to visit.

Killarney ON (CPT2)

buzz around for a while to check out the amazing geology sticking out of the tropical turquoise of georgian bay... then land, park on the cute little apron hidden in the woods (100LL available) and walk a mile through the forest to the best fish and chips in ontario... (actually, you can pass on the chips, get the fish :))

ps. don't forget to check out the bear tracks on the side of the road

pps. oops, somebody said the prairies? :)

Steinbach Manitoba

Golf course on the airport and some of the finest Mennonite food in the world. You eat there and you will be sitting with dreams of fine flying homewards in your snoring position afterwards.

Oldtimer, you forgot to mention that you can park your airplane at the north end of the runway and you are right at the Cotton Woods golf course..

St.Andrews just North of Winnipeg... Larters Golf course is a 3 minute drive away, Selkirk Golf course is about a 15 minute drive. Or land at Selkirk and you can go snag some catfish and be closer to the Selkirk golfcourse.

Of course theres always the funspots as well... anywhere ending with a Lake/Rapids/House at the end...

Steinbach is good. The Golf course adjacent has good food. And the new restaurant at the North of the field is good as well. Also consider Beausjejour, Mb. It's not in the flight supp. but it's on the west side of town, south of the highway (and concrete plant) and directly west of an auto wrecker. There is a north/south and east west strip. And you can taxi within 50' of a drive-in burger place. (Bison Burger is good)

Oops I forgot. Lundar, MB has a strip and it's in the CFS. It has the best 'Chicken Chef' in the province (if that means anything) within walking distance. Very good food and incredibly inexpensive. If ypou go to Flin Flom, Bakers narrows lodge is two miles up the road. They should pick you up if you ask. I have been very happy with the food. Also Swan River, although it's a 2 mile hike as well. Has a Mr. Ribs with very good food. A word on St.Andrews airport. The restaurant closes at 2:00PM and is closed on Sunday. Lyncrest-Winnipeg has free coffee and you can likely get a ride from someone there.
