Any pilots from Vancouver or Saskatoon?

Post by charlizesen1 »

Hi guys, coming to Canada to do my training in February ( 0- CPL, ME, FIR) and I'm trying to decide between Saskatoon and Vancouver. I hear the weather is better for flying in Saskatoon but it's also extremely cold. I also hear that there's a good chance of getting an instructing gig in Vancouver with there being quite a few schools around the area. My goal is to fly 5-6 days a week if the weather permits. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Cheaper to live in YXE, and my understanding is that the schools can’t keep instructors so you’d have a good chance of getting a job after you’re done if that’s your intention.

And working for the flight school you did your training at is a great way to get your permanent residency and have a work visa to stay.

I bet the weather’s better in SK than on the west coast that time of year as well.

As far as weather goes, as long as you don't mind it being -40° in the winter and 40° in the summer, Saskatoon isn't too bad. The only issue being that the flight schools generally have a -25° cutoff, so there's often quite a bit of downtime in the winter. If you're looking for an instructing gig, Mitchinson's would probably be your best bet seeing as how quickly they go through instructors. If you'd like to forgo that route, West Wind and Transwest will hire King Air and Twin Otter FOs with 200 hours. Transwest will usually hire right out the flight schools, but West Wind generally will only take internal applicants for those positions.
