Hiring on track?
Hello all
We hear about all these crazy hiring numbers (coronavirus notwithstanding), I think someone posted over 900 vacancies on last bid. I always hear things like hiring 500+ this year, but they never actually seem to get close to the numbers.
How many have now actually been hired this year? 100? 200? Are we headed toward the magic 900 number? Does anyone know? Does anyone care? Maybe just me?

4 classes so far:
Jan 06: 36
Jan 27: 39
Feb 17: 48
Mar 02: 40 approx (still underway no information yet)
Another large class will commence at the end of March. Last equipment bid indicated 936 vacancies however this bid was cancelled so that number may decrease/increase depending on what is happening with the 737 and of course the corona virus. Next equipment bid scheduled for April.

Re: Hiring on track?
I love seeing my layoff protection continue to grow.
Re: Hiring on track?
Things probably are going to change. We will most likely find out in the next 2-4 week regarding future hiring. Don't see layoffs but could definitely see a hiring freeze.
Re: Hiring on track?
Never say never With all the widebody gonna be parked and bookings dropping like a stone it ain’t good
Re: Hiring on track?
UAL CEO just did an employee video conference.
Asia (highest UAL revenue source) - bookings are non-existent. Many domestic flights to be downgraded.
UAL hiring freeze. No layoffs.....but offering 6 month LOA.
Each airline will have to decide how it wants to manage its way through this travel drought.

Re: Hiring on track?
Agree, the only thing is if this is short term (6 months), a layoff would cause lots of people moving around to other equipment (layoff by seniority). Not to mention some of the 400+ 737 pilots (sitting at home) would need to be retrained on others types while others guys would need to get trained to fly on the max, would be a nightmare for the company considering the max may start flying again.
A hiring freeze would at least avoid all that (just erase the 800 vacancies)
If this is a long term event, ya who knows. AC is in a special situation with the max grounding since they don't have NG's.
Not to mention a Transat merge may even cause a surplus. What a turn of events.
Re: Hiring on track?
Yeah crazy. Don’t think the max is in this summers flying and it doesn’t take long for cash to burn in this industry. Personally I think the virus is just getting going now here and it will be a long slow recovery.

No kidding. It’s amazing how many don’t realize how quickly the music can stop. The ones who have been in this industry long enough always said, “seniority is everything, you never know when another recession, terror attack, or SARS event can happen again.”
Well, here it is.
And to realize it’s only just beginning to really spread in the States. Looking more and more grim everyday.

Re: Hiring on track?
So in other words, NO they aren't hiring anywhere near enough to fill 936 slots this year.danield wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 12:13 pm 4 classes so far:

Re: Hiring on track?
We can expect EMBs and Mainline 767 to be parked very soon, some of the older 320’s, more wide body’s on domestic and US route some previously differed maintenance and interior updates moved up, reductions in all cases, probably delays in hiring as current retraining will clog sims availability....

The flights ops guy put out a thing a while ago that said they estimate 400-700 this year depending.co-joe wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 11:04 pmSo in other words, NO they aren't hiring anywhere near enough to fill 936 slots this year.danield wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 12:13 pm 4 classes so far:

Re: Hiring on track?
Owned airframes will be parked first. Leases will keep flying unless there is an early out clause.pilotbzh wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:35 am We can expect EMBs and Mainline 767 to be parked very soon, some of the older 320’s, more wide body’s on domestic and US route some previously differed maintenance and interior updates moved up, reductions in all cases, probably delays in hiring as current retraining will clog sims availability....
AC has always said during the analyst calls that capacity is flexible due to combination of owned/leased. Looks like that theory is about to be tested.

Re: Hiring on track?
Any confirmed news regarding Ground School in April? are they frozen? I believe there is one end of March as well, any possibilities for it to be cancelled?
