CPL instrument time?

Quick question, I've done all my exams and training according to the schools training syllabus, and have ended training with exactly 20.1 Instrument hours, 8.8 of which is sim and the rest is hood time, I went to file was told by the school that I didn't have enough hours, as the PPL hours don't count toward the 20 hours of instrument flying needed for a CPL, and therefore would need to pay for another 5 hours of training. The reason I ask is the wording can be a little confusing, and this school is notorious for being penny pinchers and milking students. I heard from a friend that at is school it was just the 20 hours total time that was needed, not an additional 20 hours after the PPL.

You need 20 hours of instrument time, in addition to your PPL instrument time. Of the 20 additional hours, up to 10 can be in a simulator/FTD.

In other words, the FTU is correct and your friend is wrong. Not to worry, they'll find out that they're wrong when they submit their paperwork to the Authorized Person. Or, they'll figure it out before then and just accrue the required hours...

Alright so I will have to bump out another 5 then taking my total to 25. Wish they made a better syllabus but I'll try and see if anywhere still has a sim open.

Even if it is expensive, you will always find extra hours handy later on. When I started many moons ago, my PPL solo was delayed because of TC hold ups with the medical. Sure, it took me more time than some to solo (probably less than people have to do nowadays), but in the end, hours are hours, and you can never have too many. My issue with training, is that the scheduling is often not well defined. You always end up scrambling. The only times everything went super smoothly for me, were for the ME and IFR, and they were done at different places too - I instructed at one, and the other was 3 hours away. Both places are long out of business.

It might be very expensive, but if I were to do it all again, I would search high and low for an FTU that is organised; like Cornwall. No affiliation or anything, but I was very impressed with them for IFR training. Your time is money too, and taking time off to finish is highly recommended, from my view. Let's hope we can get back to somewhat normal soon enough, and find that vaccine.

20 hood post PPL (25 hrs inst). The CFI who signed off my CPL didn't see I was short and TC sent it back. Didn't matter cause I was already working on my Group One and had the time by then. Was like 2 hrs off.

I was in the exam same situation when I filed my paperwork for my CPL. I ended up doing a crash course on IFR approaches in the simulator, did five hours straight one night.
