Companies that hire pilots off the ramp

Hello,

I'm an aviation student and I'm currently working on a project related to companies that hire low-time pilots off the ramp. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the above subject matter.

I'm looking for names of companies in Canada that hire off the ramp (i.e. Wasaya)

I'm also looking for some minimum requirements or physical attributes that these companies look for in a low-time pilot/ramp worker.

Lastly, I would like to investigate the pros and cons of becoming a ramp worker in hopes of getting into an airplane as a pilot. I realize that some companies do not garuntee a spot in an airplane and it could be years before the ramp attendant may ever get a chance to fly.

If theres anybody out there with some information about this project, it would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, good to see that the aviation colleges are really training their students to the max. Dont worry about flight training, lets do reports on companies who hire. I guess you got to fill the 2 years, or however long it takes to get your diploma some how. Buddy, why does your school care which companines hire from the ground, dont most of the grads get real jobs!!!

I think I might be in for it now. :(

Hey, at least they are not telling their students that they are going to be airline pilots when they graduate.

If you want to fly a 737 with 200 hours go to Europe.

You gotta admire a school that makes their students take a close look at the industry before sending them out. This report is in essence accomplishing this. If you can include the state of the industry into training, all power to them!

Don't listen to these grumpy old sour grapes. It is a smart project you are working on and all the more power to you. I can't help you much with first-hand knowledge the only one I know is Skyward-- check their website where they discuss how they do this, and a few others-- First Air, Wasaya, Buffalo Airways, and some of the "on the lake" type operators.

This is a perfect way for you to perhaps establish communication with different influential people in the companies themselves. Companies tend to be more open and feel less threatened when someone comes by saying "I am in college and doing a study for one of my courses" rather than "I'm a low-time unemployed pilot looking for a job." Hope you've been told by now that networking plays a major roll in your career development.

Then again you might run into one or two of the same sour grapes on this bulletin board. :roll:

Right Seat Captain, check your PM's

Well I just like to say thank you to anybody who's responded to this topic. Including the ignorant guys out there that think that people that go to college come out with a head thats way too big for their bodies and a huge ego and all that. I'm just a young pilot and I really didn't think about the guys that come out of this program and think their kings and stuff. You guys have provided me with a good eye-opener and now I know not to act like some of my predecessors in the industry. As for the supportive types, thanks for all the help and I'll be sure to contact some operators. If there is anybody else out there with more information, I'm gladly receptive.

I do agree with some of the others, you should probably look up this information on your own, not through a chat forum. Just to let you know, First Air no longer puts low timers on the ramp into the right seat.

What is the forum for if you cannot ask people for information? Isn't it for an exchange of info? I don't think he is being lazy, just using one of the tools that is available for him. Looks like he is using others too...

I see no problem with it... wish I had known about this when I started...

I know who hires pilots to work the ramp (or at least who used to) and you know how I know? I made many many many phone calls and I asked them. I wouldn't dream of depriving you the joy of calling everybody yourself AZN.

Just think of it as practice bleeding. Learning how to talk to receptionists, take no for an answer, and come back smiling is what landing the big job is all about. When you are finished spending hundreds of dollars on long distance bills and thousands of dollars on road trips, see how compelled you feel to hand out free advice to people on the internet.

Now go pick up the phone and start calling. Trust me, it's good practice. cj
