Looks like Jazz is getting into the freight business.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I would not want to hand load all of that freight. What a PITA.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Hmmm .. Q400 is the same type rating at the DH8-100/300. Considering Wasaya has the first actual Dash-8 Freighter .. shouldn't they get the distinction of being the "first" Dash 8 Freight operator? I don't mean to piss in peoples cheerios but .. give credit, where credit it due.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I think Wasaya's Dash 8 100 PF's came from a Voyageur Airways mod on ex Jazz Dash 8 100s (which Wasaya now operates).Localizer wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 4:10 pm Hmmm .. Also Bombardier (before they sold the Q400 business) offered a Q400 Combi which a Japanese airline purchased several examples of, what DHC Canada has, seems to be a brand new retrofit option.

Actually, Air Ontario was the 1st. a f a I k, to operate a Dh-8 in a cargo config. We developed a cargo coversion kit for it, but that operation didn't last too long.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
really inefficient, an ATR 72 freighter can carry 17 700lbs roughly at a much cheaper operating cost and can be loaded on pallets through the front door.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
But certainly more efficient than having Q400's parked and doing nothing.
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
So Jazz should go out and buy some ATRs and spend 3 months of training crews to fly them, for a slight cost and loading efficiency?
Thankfully you’re not our CEO!

More along the lines of why wouldn’t the ATR companies be chartering themselves out for this freight work that is required ?

I'm curious if Jazz might consider using a -900 for freight too.

I would say no.. because then why not just use mainline for that. Just use a 320 or something.genetic jack hammer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 6:58 am I'm curious if Jazz might consider using a -900 for freight too.

Bajan pilot is correct. (as usual)
Air Ontario invested a fair amount in the 90’s engineering a quick change full cargo mod for the Classic. Fire suppression, the works.
I believe that Voyageur now owns the rights to the mod.

That had better be a Banks going down.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
This mod leaves the seat tracks, windows, overheaed bins and everything still intact. Basically takes the seats out and strap down cargo to the seat tracks instead. The isle needs to be open because fire supression will be people walking down the isle with a fire extinguisher. There's no weight reduction, nothing being done to actually make it into a "good" freighter. This is temporarily repurposing the airplane to haul a little freight. They want the plane to quickly transform back into a passenger aircraft with minimum effort. If they wanted a perminant Q400 freighter, the overhead bins would be gone, windows removed and plugged with aluminum, floor would be entirely changed. Fire supression would be automated so the now non existant isle can carry cargo. The weight capacity of a perminant Q400 freighter would be substantially higher than this temporary mod.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Speaking of Dash 8 fire suppression, does anyone know what the regs are on certification when it comes to combis?
The Dash 8-100/200 combis have an awful lot of space for freight and bags, no aisle to walk down to extinguish a fire, and no built-in fire extinguishers. Not sure about Air Inuit's 300 Combi mod.
Meanwhile the Q400 has full fire suppression in a baggage space that's much smaller than the above combis' space.
ATR maintains an aisle I believe?
So what's up with that?

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
Dash 8 100 and probably the earlier 300 models require a space above the bags for a person to crawl above the baggage with a fire extinguisher. The later versions have a divider making a mini isle in the back.
Also depends on what category of cargo compartment, A, B, C or D. I'm no expert on cargo compartment certification requirements, but you're free to look it up in the CARs.

Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I believe the DH8-106s (basically the Q100s) had the mini-isle as well, but I've been wrong before. Does Jazz have any of those?
Re: Jazz Dash 8 400 Freighter
I don’t believe so. Even if we did I think the -100s are pretty much removed from service now.goingnowherefast wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 6:30 pm I believe the DH8-106s (basically the Q100s) had the mini-isle as well, but I've been wrong before. Does Jazz have any of those?
