The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
I am wondering how the COVID stuff is affecting the AvCanada population. And we haven't had a poll about this. Polls are cool.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Code: Select all
I am laid off, or expect to be laid off, do not expect to return and have not found a new job yet. I hope to find a temporary non-pilot job and return to a pilot job ASAP Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
Well shoot, I thought I covered all options!200Above wrote: ↑Sun May 24, 2020 8:24 amI am laid off, or expect to be laid off, do not expect to return and have not found a new job yet. I hope to find a temporary non-pilot job and return to my previous pilot job ASAP.Code: Select all

Close! Felt like I was checking NOTAMS.
I answered with what I copied. I think that's the closest to my situation and represents the spirit of the poll.
I will be laid off. I will get a temporary non-aviation job. I want to return to my pilot job (recall).

Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
Quit my job in february, was starting a new pilot job, which got cancelled. Hoping to find a pilot job.
Since I’m flying the King Air, does that qualify me to fly the Queen of the skies?

Should put an two options for the still-employed:
Still working at my job at full pay.
Still working at my job at reduced MMG or pay.

Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
Here's my unique situation, not really covered in the poll: Currently still receiving full paycheques (albeit small, as I am an instructor) from my company, yet our school is shutdown at the moment.
I am essentially not working, other than on a few small projects such as editing and improving ground schools. I really appreciate how they've treated myself and coworkers throughout this.

Chances are you'd have been laid off anyways if you'd stayed, if that is any consolation...

Maybe whoever did this, should do it again, and we will see if the results have changed

Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
I'm planning on going back to grad school and leaving flying for good unless I get recalled within the next 6 months.
Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
I should have taken a screen shot of the old poll for comparison., hope someone did and will post it

Between the PM and Covid we might be all screwed anyway.
(ie. flying is evil: you'll catch covid and create a giant carbon footprint)

For Ash Ketchum: go to Grad School anyways. You can always go back flying if you really want to. I always wonder what would have been had I gone back after grad school, but alas, I did just fine out of aviation, and 1000% certain that I made more money than I would have in aviation. YMMV, obviously, but aviation always had me one step away from the poorhouse.

Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
Thanks for the advice. The Mba program I intend on going to is one of the best in Canada however I would need to take out a big student loan and wouldn't be able to afford the pay cut to go back to flying later on. I guess I could always buy my own plane down the road and fly for fun...ayseven wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 4:52 pm For Ash Ketchum: go to Grad School anyways. Re: The Avcanada COVID Employment Poll
If you are on furlough you have a seniority number and depending on your contract and union there is a time limit for that. Hopefully your union is proactive to negotiate an extension if that clause exists. It's possible to give yourself a educated guess at a time line for progression. It looks like covid is a major fact of life until such time there is a vaccine so there will be no growth in present day crew levels and a possibility of roll backs depending on the severity of the 2nd wave.
My point is that most of us strive for the "money" seat and the biggest iron available so that in the last few years of our career we make that nest egg. I can foresee that pilots laid off at this time may never find that seat before they retire. I guess it all comes down to the math and what you want to achieve. If that masters degree gives you that and if it guarantees you a good paying job and career it likely is a better choice. I doubt if you will get a recall before you finish your degree but a recall is always in your back pocket and you can make a choice or even defer( depending on your contract)
To me it's a no brainer, education, and yes when your are established that successful career buying that fun aircraft will always be there as well.
Best of luck in the choice you make.
