RADAR or RNAV required

Post by NLEMB24 »

Hello,

I do understand “radar required” for approaches which do have not have a procedure turn. However, what does “RADAR or RNAV” required mean? Example: ILS05 YYZ & ILS 06L In YUL both have no PT or IAF (just IF). They are both similar in nature, only difference is YUL has the “...or RNAV required”.

Thanks,
G

Presumably the way to get to the localizer is either RADAR vectors or self navigate to a GPS fix, hence either/or.

So I'm curious then. The ILS for YYZ is only Radar required. Does not have the RNAV option. Does it mean that if the YYZ Radar goes down for whatever reason, you will not be able to do the ILS for 05???

I would say no you can’t. I suppose you could argue that if you have approved RNAV equipment on your aircraft, you could navigate to XIGAM the IF for a straight in approach, but in general the issue is that there is no authorized course reversal (procedure turn or T fixes) published. How then do you navigate to the inbound localizer without a radar vector when approaching YYZ from a direction opposite to the inbound approach course?
None of the RNAV approaches in YYZ carry the “Radar required” note.
Regardless, It would be an awfully long day in YYZ if the radar ever went down.

You won’t be cleared for a “RADAR required” approach if there’s no RADAR. How could you be?
