CPAER (Harv's Air Question)

Post by avcraig »

Hi all,

Thinking of getting the Harv's Air course for the CPAER. For those of you that used it for the written exam, how long did it take you guys from start of studying, to written exam ready? I'm hoping to have the written exam done in the next month or two and I'm starting to study this week.

Obviously the timing matters for how often someone studies, but I wanted to come on here and see how long it took some of you and how much you studied per day.

And to my knowledge the written has to be done before the Flight Test so I'm trying to time that perfectly as well. I know Transport Canada removed that requirement for some written exams but I don't think the Commercial one was a part of that list.

Thanks!

You have until June 1st to do the Flight Test, without having done the CPAER. With lockdowns still in place, I wouldn't be surprised if this date is extended, but for now, you have about 4 months.

I also used Harv's to write the CPAER. The CPAER is basically the PPAER + a couple of other chapters. If you just wrote the PPAER or remember material from it, you're already about 70% of the way into the CPAER, in my opinion. A month of studying should be sufficient, although I can't see TC offices opening in a month anyway so it may not be worth the rush.

It'll depend how motivated you are as a self-paced student. Can you actually sit down at your computer for an hour at a time, without getting distracted?

I did Harv’s CPAER in 2019, went from absolutely zero knowledge (wrote PPL in 2013) to exam ready in 12 days.
That was 8 hours of studying everyday, however I skipped 99% of the videos and just read the slides.

As the previous reply states, if you skip the videos, it'll be much, much faster. I started the course in mid-November, and have been studying quite steadily for going on three months. However, that is having watched every video and trying to be "responsible" with my learning. If you just want to cram for the test, pass it and forget it, then four to six weeks of non-stop hitting the books will probably do it. As previously stated, though, TC isn't currently allowing the exam to be written. You'll likely be in a hurry just to end up waiting.
