Does this online flight planning service actually work in Canada?

Post by PilotY »

Hi all,

A friend of mine recently came to me and explained a new software he had discovered. He said it allowed him to create, file, and close flight plans as well as receive weather briefings. I've always just called FIC to file, as a NavCanada employee told me once that they don't like dealing with flight plans filed online or with ForeFlight. (I'm still in a training environment so adding 30+ planes into Foreflight all for the purpose of filing is tedious and I don't mind calling FIC).

Anyways, I decided to check it out, and it's VERY American by the looks of it. I'm afraid that my friend is filing flight plans that ping USA flight service and not Canadian, therefore he's not actually filing at all. The website is 1800wxbrief.com if you want to look at it.

I think I'm still gonna call FIC personally. But I was wondering what your thoughts were on this website or if any of you had experience with it. We start IFR soon. Might be worthwhile to avoid that awkward moment when he calls for clearance only to find there's nothing on file.

Pretty much every airline in Canada files flight plans online they definitely don’t call them in.
