Home Theater aka Stereo

Post by Hedley »

Well, I think it's time for me to join the 21st century and go 7.1 ... stereo is nice, but it's sorta 70's ....

Anyways, I'm looking at:

1) 1 x Harman Kardon AVR 240 7x50W 7.1 Amp:

2) 7 x Infinity Primus 160 2-way 6.5" speakers, 49Hz -> 20 KHz

http://www.infinitysystems.com/homeaudi ... IMUS160BKS

3) 1 x Infinity PS 12 300W 12 inch powered subwoofer, 25Hz+

http://www.infinitysystems.com/homeaudi ... SS&cat=PSU

I don't really know much about this stuff - does anyone have experience
with 5.1/6.1/7.1 systems? Does it matter if all 7 satellite speakers are the same?

Thanks, Hedley

I don't know that much either but I do know when I replace what I currently have it will not be a 'home theatre in a box' idea. The Harmon Amp is a great starting point, I think if you stay away from Best Buy and Future Shop and go to a proper store and listen to different systems you might like what you hear. Some companies make good amps but not so good on the speaker market, etc. Anyway another thing, I've been told by many people there is no need for the 7th channel (7.1), anyone else hear this I've been told 6.1 is all that is needed??!

hey. i've got 7.1 at home by sony. if my tv were bigger i'd probably prefer watching movies at home to at the theater, the sound is that good. i havent heard anything about only needing 6.1. that probably came about b/c currently (that i know of) there arent any movies actually encoded in 7.1, only 6.1. however, my amp take that 6.1 signal and by some mathemagic makes it a 7.1 signal.

anyways, i just got back from a long flight, feel free to pm me with any questions.
