Agreed. We just sat there in the holding bay and the sound was impressive, the kind of noise you can feel. Watching it lumber down the runway, and not a short runway, you get this feeling like it's not real. Nothing that big is going to fly. The whole machine was impressive really. What a loss.![]()

The Ukrainians are already saying that it will be rebuilt, with a timeline of 5+ years and at a cost of roughly $3+ Billion US - which they say the Russians will pay for destroying it. I say good for the Ukrainians for already saying it will be rebuilt as part of a war settlement.

I had no idea Antonov was a Ukrainian company after the Union fell. Always thought it was Russian. I hope they prevail.
Re: An225 Jobs
Antonov was formed in 1946 in Novosibirsk, Russia (Soviet Union); by 1952 it relocated to Kiev/Kyiv and has been Ukrainian in spirit ever since.

The 225 and some of the 124’s were/are operated by Antonov Design Bureau, they always had Ukrainian flags on them. Some of the 124’s operated by other companies were Russian flagged.

Can see the tail sticking out the back of the hangar. Hopefully it’s relatively intact still.

With todays technology, they'll probably rebuild it bigger, better, and more efficient.
Just think, that plane with 6 GE9x engines on her. Now that'd be some lifting power.

Wouldn't it be cheaper/better/more efficient to just start with fresh aluminium, and an old data plate? She looks pretty well f@cked right now..7ECA wrote: ↑Mon Feb 28, 2022 12:54 pm The Ukrainians are already saying that it will be rebuilt, with a timeline of 5+ years and at a cost of roughly $3+ Billion US - which they say the Russians will pay for destroying it. I believe there's a second, partially completed airframe so maybe Plan A should be to complete it as a replacement.

A brief, albeit rather sad look at what remains of the AN-225 amidst the ruins of the Hostomel Airport.
