This was already happening before covid. I talked to many RJ guys saying they were being approached while in uniform down in some US terminals. All stories were the same, they got approached by guys in a suit with a business card representing a regional airline in that city. They were saying the regionals were desperately looking for jet experience, they were offering aircraft and base selection of their choice and the company would take care of all licensing conversions and visa requirements plus offering a significant hiring bonus along with retention bonus with flow opportunities to a major in the future.

I must’ve talked to 6-10 different guys pre covid in the crew rooms about this.

Only a matter of time before it kicks off again.

Anyone knows what will happen with the first few ground school regarding DEC? Since there was no bid, I don’t believe the company can offer DEC to any of those candidates. I’m assuming most in those classes will qualify.

I believe they are al l offered FO for now. They need to go through all theirs guys with AAs before offering DEC, including the ones getting hired this year.

I would be surprised if they hire DEC before the end of the summer. But as someone else pointed out, if you want a CA spot, get your seniority number now and play the waiting game. You'll be in front of any DEC they hire down the road.

There cannot be DEC positions offered until the company runs and equipment bid and shows the CA vacancies and the inability (or unwillingness of the pilots) to fill them.

so basically they are dangling a carrot or bait and switch, to entice more experienced pilots to join

And that snapshot is taken at the exact time of awarding (eligibility limited to active pilots with a seniority number), not weeks or months in advance. At least according to the language in the current CBA.

DEC is no different than a new-hire FO. They are not told at the interview what their Base and Equipment will be (as Jazz is a multi-base multi equipment type airline). No ‘reservations’ are made at the interview.

Having said that, after the seniority draw is complete (happens on company indoc course), the new-hire pilots bid for vacancies that are available (company controls which available vacancies are available to new-hire course). That could potentially give the company some control in respect of DEC availability (i.e. put DEC on a course with other pilots that are not qualified for CA positions and post unbid CA vacancies). However, there are no provisions for training out of seniority. No DEC could be trained prior to any more senior pilot with an award in that Position.

Sound complicated? It isn’t. Just follow the rules.

For a new hire looking to upgrade ASAP in YVR or YYC which aircraft would be quickest?

I would guess the Q. There's a lot of Q out west.

But as far as I know, YVR is more senior than YYC

How about out east.. if someone was looking for YUL base and had the choice between RJ and Q4 in ground school. Fastest upgrades, or going up in seniority quicker.. one type with more multi day pairings if someone will be commuting?

I'd choose the RJ, but there's a lot of Q also

That is for operational integrity, which as the email said, the union is getting involved because the amount of training-related grievances is increasing.

That was a leftover from a COVID era LOU affecting the training plan for Bid 2021-01. Will not apply going forward as all of those COVID LOU’s are now expired.

YYC is more senior than YVR.
Q400 in YYC will be fastest, the RJ has been continually shrinking

RJ in YVR is junior compared to the Q400 so RJ is possibly faster than the Q.

Out East the RJ has a much larger roster in YYZ than Q400 and similar to YUL.

Crazy, I would have thought yvr RJ was pretty senior.

I am not sure what you would offered at the interview…

Under current terms of the CBA, a new-hire pilot cannot be offered a specific Position (Base/Equipment/Status) until:

1. They are an employee (on payroll)
2. They are on course (PIT)
3. They have been assigned a seniority number at Jazz (see 1. and 2.)
4. No other more senior Jazz pilot who is qualified and not frozen has bid for that Position

Bring good questions to the interview.

Jazz has absolutely no justification for their awful FO pay, especially in years 1-5. But people who scoff at the left seat compensation numbers are retarded. Considering you show up to a fully fuelled fully loaded fully filed aircraft and away you go.
...
I scoff at your left seat compensation numbers. All 705 Captains show up to a fully fuelled, fully loaded aircraft, with a flight plan filed. That's how Type A dispatch works.

Your Captain wages are embarrassing to our profession.

109 vacant CA positions (looking out 12 months). Almost all YYZ based. 81 YYZ CRJ CA.

Some of these will be filled over time through internal bidding.

Not sure what Jazz has planned externally. These would be jet DEC positions. New plane (for all but a Voyageur pilot). New operator. New SOP.

Will be a challenge for anyone without a strong technical background and meaningful command experience in either corporate or 705 world.

And then there is the starting pay…… less than many 703/704 CA.

Good luck to all applicants.

Hello
I have been reading the posts here for a while. I wonder what life is for a Junior Captain based in YYZ now, in July 2022? Do they fly a lot while in Reserve? How hard it is to commute? What is the net monthly pay? Are there benefits you can opt-out to get better net pay? I know the starting salary by CBA is 84.89. I have seen the paystub somebody posted but it was for half the month and didn´t include any overtime or Per Diems (which I know are not really part of the income, etc).

And I also know this all depends on what the company decides, if there is a bad recession, more lockdowns, or if the war in Europe goes nuclear or the energy crisis gets worst, etc.

I know that for a DEC that picture could last for a few years as other people with more seniority gets upgrades. I just wonder what life for a Junior Captain is like right now.

Feel free to PM
Thanks

Toto
