Bird Strike Smells

Post by pelmet »

I have hit a few birds over the years but it was never in an area that would result in a smell noticeable to the crew. This strike led to some mis-identification. Which shows that a cooked bird may not always smell like KFC. Remember....it is via Google Translate from French:

"C-FFAL, a Boeing 737-2R8C operated by Glencore Canada Corporation as RAG100,
was on an instrument flight rules flight from Rouyn-Noranda, QC airport
(CYUY) to Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, QC (CYUL) with 35
passengers and 4 crew members on board. During the rotation during take-off, the crew of
driver heard a detonation noise coming from the left side of the aircraft followed by an odor of
rubber. A passenger observed small flames coming out of engine #1. The crew has
suspected left landing gear tire failure and followed checklist
emergency (QRH). The flight continued towards CYUL with the landing gear down. The crew has
contacted the CYUY in-flight service station (FSS) to advise of possible debris on the runway.
Once in communication with Montreal ACC, the crew declared an emergency (PAN PAN)
and reported possibly having suffered a puncture or two. The aircraft landed without
jammed on runway 24 right at 22:20z. There were no injuries or damage. Motor #1 has
was extinguished and inspected on the taxiway and no damage was observed. After
verification, it was found that a bird strike occurred at CYUY."
