Commuting @ Jazz

Post by b727 »

Just wondering, do the folks at Jazz allow commuting, or do you have to live at your posting base. Thanks

Hey b727,

Yes you can commute to your base, although what I am hearing it is becoming harder since the load factors are so high.

Hope this helps.

How much does it typically cost each month? How hard is it to ride jumpseat?
Just wondering what some people do. Thanks.

giligan,

The farther you commute the more you will pay. I know of some pilots who live in the Edmonton area and drive to their base in Calgary just because it is easier for them. You can ask for the jump seat, it is up to the captain if it is granted. I personally will not turn away a commuting pilot, unless we are over weight or it is already spoken for.

Hope this helps.

Find out how many flts per day from your house to base. Find out how many other pilots in your city work for Jazz, to determine whether you have a good chance of getting bumped by a more senior pilot. Apparently, you can't get in trouble if you miss a flight if you've tried to get on 2 flights prior.

Good Luck

Jazz has a commuting policy. As bede said, if you have allowed yourself sufficient back ups ( I believe 2 flights ) and you still cannot get to work, you can drop your cycle with no credit and attempt to make it up later in the month without disciplinary action.

From what I know, Jazz has a commuting policy, and AC doesn't. Missing flight at AC=big trouble. Also, if Jazz services your city, you get priority over mainline commuters.

Thinking of commuting out of Halifax, just wondering what is an easier city to commute to, Toronto or Montreal? And is it true you get priority over mainline guys?

Jazz pilots have priority over AC pilots only for the jumpseat on Jazz aircraft. AC pilots have jumpseat priority on AC aircraft. Date of hire dictates your priority if the jumpseat is not available reguardless of who operates the flight (I think). Lots of pilots commute from YHZ to both YYZ and YUL. From what I hear they can both be tough to get on unless you have a good seniority number. Apparently YYZ has more flights though.

Good luck

Another question on commuting, does anyone commute out of Regina or Saskatoon and how is it. Seems to be a fair bit of selection now that mainline no longer serves here(more Jazz flights).

Also, this no passes for six months, does that mean no passes for you to commute or no pass privelages for family and friends. Thanks

No passes at all for 6 months!!!! Nada, zippo, zilch :(

Commuting policy is reasonable but I as a clarification I believe you have to find a flite that arrives at least 2 hrs b4 checkin and then try to get on the 2 flites b4 that one,

From what I heard Halifax is a tough commute. Lots of ex Nova guys (like 200 or something).

It is pretty hard to commute in your first 6 months at JAZZ. Its A really good place to work for, but you had better move as soon as you get the job.
OR find another way of commuting.

Do you need passes to ride the jumpseat or is there a 6 month wait to qualify for it? Lastly, is there a charge to ride said seat?
thx, giligan

Yes you need passes to ride in the jumpseat, Yes there is a charge for it. For all intents and purposes its the same as riding in the back. Same charge etc. The only reason you will sit up there is if the flight is full in the back. It will save your bacon on occasion if you are the only Jazz guy on the standby list for a Jazz flight. You will have priority for the jump over anyone that works at AC. However as was mentioned earlier that is on Jazz flights only. If its a AC flight then you are below AC pilots and Flight Attendants.

Interesting, I would have thought that to charge for the jumpseat would mean it was earning revenue, even if it was an employee at a reduced rate. In the past I have rode jumpseat on other airlines and been given a refund as they were not able to charge for it. Oh well.
thanks.

I was talking to the Asst. CP for YYZ today about this issue. As of current, you CANNOT commute prior to six months. Crew sched. cannot give you a pairing if you are somewhere other than YYZ and unsure you will make it. However management is in discussion right now as to allow it.

Allow what, commuting before the 6 months is up, or the pairing thing?

Yes, but an interline pass that doesn't include tax is a standby ticket as was in my case. Sadly, the days of jumpseating are gone.
