And judging by the increasingly diverse population in Alberta this would be an excellent opportunity to bypass that huge mess called Pearson and simply fly direct to a major "hub" where you can connect to go anywhere in the world with all kinds of airlines. Or take a few days in the desert to relax and shop. Dubai has a lot of shopping. Yeah it is most definitely not Fort Mac.
My two cents: they'll fly to Tokyo before they fly to Dubai.

"The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has approved a request from WestJet to operate scheduled international service between Canada and Japan, PAX has learned.

As per a determination notice posted on Nov. 30, 2022, the CTA noted that it is satisfied that WestJet, in accordance with the Air Transport Agreement, meets “all the applicable requirements” for operating the service, which would expand the carrier’s global reach quite significantly.
The CTA also found that the terms and conditions of the arrangement have been complied with.

Accordingly, the CTA has issued WestJet a Japan licence, which is subject to conditions within Canada’s Air Transportation Regulations.

Some conditions apply, such as WestJet being authorized to operate scheduled flights on routes as set out in the arrangement, which has not yet been made public."

If you want to go to an unaffordable featureless place in the middle of nowhere floating on a lake of oil, then take a trip to Ft. MacMurray - at least they won't stone you to death for taking a sip of alcohol!
And, if you want to transit elsewhere in the world, go west through somewhere civilized such as Tokyo, Singapore, or Bangkok.
See you in YOW next February at Convoy 2.0!!!

It’s the “hubs” thing. If you’re thinking DXB just as the endpoint you’re missing the point of DXB. From there one has extensive access to Africa, Middle East, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Iran etc.

Performance wise, YYC can clearly be a challenge as others have shown but, as previously mentioned a typical hot, humid summer day in DXB can take density altitude from SL to around 4000’.

So DXB can make sense (cents?! 😉) but will overcoming the challenges be worth it? 🤷‍♂️
