Coroner recommendations.
Hey all.
Long time no see! I don't know how many members remember me, or are even if any are still here.
My husband died as the result of a floatplane crash way way back in 2005.
I spent several years here on AvCanada learning more about the industry so that I could advocate for change in regulations such that no more Swiss cheese would line up leading to unnecessary deaths.
In 2012 the coroner released a report including recommendations resulting from these four crashes.
28 February 2005, collision with water off Quadra Island
03 August 2008, collision with terrain near Port Alice on Vancouver Island
16 November 2008, collision with terrain on South Thormanby Island
29 November 2009, collision with water at Lyall Harbour on Saturna Island

This morning I had a call from CTV to do an interview. I feel it's time to weigh in.
What I'm hoping is that somebody would be able to take a quick glance at the report and tell me if any of those recommendation were implemented!

Re: Coroner recommendations.
Note, I see life jacket and egress training were supposed to be enacted but covid got in the way...

Re: Coroner recommendations.
Recommendation 2 has had some movement, as you point out. The others, no.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Coroner recommendations.
Widow, welcome back and thank you for sharing this report. I have no experience in this field but wanted to thank you and your advocacy to aviation safety.
Re: Coroner recommendations.
Harbour air has been developing these https://www.aerospaceservices.ca/2021/0 ... evice-ifd/
I believe that was a direct result from the upcoming/delayed floatation device requirement for seaplane pax.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Re: Coroner recommendations.
PFDs are now required for 703 floatplane ops, as well as egress training for crew. To the best of my knowledge, none of the others are regulation, but some are certainly covered by some operators with their airplanes/training.
Re: Coroner recommendations.
Thanks for your help folks.
And thanks to TheStig. I wish I'd had more effect.

Re: Coroner recommendations.
I would say that the mandatory wearing of a flotation device is a big win for floatplane passenger safety, and your efforts likely had a significant contribution to this outcome.
Re: Coroner recommendations.
As slow (and painful) it has been, I am sure that your efforts are have had a great impact. Thank you!
Re: Coroner recommendations.
Welcome back Widow.
I'm not involved with any of this stuff, but it seems that your advocacy has had an impact. Flotation devices are mandatory as is egress training. I also think the C206 (rear door issue) was forced to make the mod to let the rear door open with flaps down.
