Not to mention the confidence of people like us - the travelling public. Who is going book a trip down south or even west coast trip knowing that it is quite possible you could be stranded on your own dime. The Sunwing shit show is still fresh, what about those passengers who a currently stranded or those who were scheduled for domestic trip today. Will they be able to get a refund. My gut feeling that folks won’t go near Flair with a 50ft barge pole. Finally one has to feel for employees at Flair going forward, probably won’t be pretty.

Repossession is the last resort that lessors/creditors won't initiate until they haven't been paid for months. This isn't just an "oops, I forgot the make the payment this month" scenario. The fact that Flair was in arrears on several aircraft from at least two lessors can't be a good sign.

The Sunwing shyte show hasn't stopped Sunwing filling all their airplanes this week. If the ticket is 5 bucks less people seem to get over their "I am never going to fly (insert airline name here) again !" remarkably fast. It is the commercial creditors like fuel and airports that really matter. If they start demanding cash in advance then Flair is done.

another thing to consider is the next few weeks will probably be the busiest aka most expensive couple weeks they will have so they will need more cash flow to cover costs of the March break rush.

With history as our guide, we know full well that airlines in the throws of going under will present a facade of "all is well with the world" right up to the minute they turn out the lights and lock the doors. Flights will be operating, staff at the desks, HR doing interviews, etc. Then when the bubble finally bursts, airplanes will land at their destinations and be seized, staff will have emails in their inboxes thanking them for their loyal service; and executives will float down to earth gently under golden parachutes.

No reputable company forgets to make a bill payment, let alone lets it go months into arrears to the point lessors are running for the doors with their assets looking for greener pastures. Also, what's a million bucks to any reasonably sized company? It's pennies in the grand scheme of things, and yet Flair ends up (at minimum) a million bucks in arrears? Come on... there's more to this than meets the eye, this rot runs deeper than we think.

You are quite correct in that memories fade if there is a 5 buck reduction to popular destinations. However with aircraft seizures due non payments does get the attention of the public because it certainly means that airline is on very shaky ground. Also remember airlines have been noted to take people’s money right up to the day they” suddenly “ cease operations. Would you book a trip with Flair now, I certainly wouldn’t.

Wonder how the pilot open houses are going this week? Hope the conference center asked for payment upfront.

Wasn't Flair sued by one of their larger shareholders a while back about over aggressive growth plans?

I would imagine any pilot who was considering leaving a job or deciding between Flair and Porter just made their decision in favour of Porter.
This will have a dramatic effect and is all but the end, I personally don’t see them coming back from this, 11 of 19 is more than 50% of their fleet, I imagine the rest are the ones from their biggest investor, who recently had them repainted and shipped off.
I feel for the employees of course and hope they find something fast, sheesh.
With exception to you know who, the used car salesman should consider a new career in sales, car sales. Get out of our profession, you’re rotten for it!

Indeed. Travelling public like myself can F off to another airline or mode for holiday or whatever travel, the employee guys/gals at Flair are no doubt on tenterhooks due to uncertainty at this time so yes, gotta feel for them for sure. Then again as you probably know much better than me, the industry is generally short of qualified pilots so Flair people would land on their feet in short order should the airline fail. Perhaps Flair can carry on doing business with a smaller fleet and reduction in destinations, who knows.

Chickens come home to roost for Flair Airlines

Post by UnionDrive »

So Flair has four planes seized by the creditor, because they can’t make the payments. Will Justin bail them out? You bet he won’t, because Flair isn’t French. For those of us who saw this coming, it’s hard to stop laughing.

Interesting as I always thought Flair was from France!

I find it appalling and despicable that anyone involved in our fickle industry would get their jollies from knowing that their fellow brothers and sisters might soon be out of a job.

I don't think those are the words I'd choose to discribe it. Many fellow Canadians, including some friends of mine work there, and it won't be a good thing if they do indeed lose their jobs.

That's capitalism though, survival of the fittest* ( in a Canadian context... )

It's unfortunate, but that's what happens when "ambition" is greater than "capability". That responsability is not on the workers though, it's on management. One airline's loss is another's gain. There is something to be said about gettign on with a stable airline, dig in and enjoy that climb up the seniority ladder.

We have a saying in the old country "Don't give the crow in your hand for the eagle on the fence". I'm sure there's an English equivalent. Unfortunately some pilots in this country take risks to "jump the que" sort to speak. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they pay the price and end up jobless after a while. I'm not suggesting this is the case here. It's just an example.

Do we know for sure they can't make the payments? I mean, they have 777 Partners behind them, who have deep pockets... Could be a case of he said she said.

I heard they're taking 3 planes out of desert parking to replace those "blocked planes". Any truth to that?

More of the "F- the left," "I don't care about anyone but myself," "vaccines cause autism" bullshit I have come to expect on AvCanada.

In life, I only have one request from the people I surround myself with... be a good person. That means you need to be polite and have empathy, accept that others have differing opinions to you and understand that it's okay to disagree, and not be a stupid flipping moron. Is that so hard to ask?

Flair’s Chief Executive Officer Stephen Jones said in an interview on Saturday that the Edmonton-based discount airline owes about US$1-million on the leases, and decried the seizures as “draconian.”
”We feel pretty aggrieved,” Mr. Jones said. “We think the impact of these actions on our crews and communities is unwarranted. But we are where we are.”

He said Flair fell behind in its lease payments after a “tough” winter on some routes. “We’ve had to manage cash very closely,” he said. “Going through the winter we have at times had to have discussions with them about terms of lease payments,” he said.
