Bid the e175. By far the best aircraft at jazz. Unless you want a Yyc or yvr base.

I would like YYC preferably or YVR because my wife and kids live out West. It's more about family than anything.

New hires that were part of ALPA carriers before get first pick in order of date of hire at their previous carrier, then it’s random seniority draw…
If you end up with something you don't want, when is the earliest you can switch? Is it possible to wait until the next bid?
Depends on what it is you don't want. If it's your base, that is a non-issue because you will more than likely be awarded your base of choice before the end of training.

If it is the equipment, you will be subject to an equipment freeze for 48 months,. The only exception is if you get awarded the E75 and want to move to YVR or YYC, in this case you would be released from your freeze after 24 months because there are no E75 based in the west.

The only other way to get released from your freeze is to bid a CA seat on your desired equipment, but beware that there are quite a few that have found making the move to the left seat on a new type somewhat challenging. Many (including me) will recommend to either switch type in same position then upgrade, OR upgrade on your current equipment and THEN switch type.

All that said, there are no "more desirable" equipment at Jazz; all types have something to offer and also have their inconveniences. Best is to make the most of it rather than remain bitter and twisted because you didn't get the type you wanted. That is a sure recipe to be miserable.

It's more of a base issue for family reasons. Thanks for explaining the process though.

Also westjet is hiring for Yyc base. And cargojet for yvr. Double the pay too, unless you are set on jazz.

Depends where you live but if you want to stay out west and be home more u can't go wrong with the Q as you do layovers in BC/AB and lots of people go home during that time. So the time you spend commuting comes back because you'll have layovers at home. But then again why apply there when there is lots of better options at the moment.

I'm guessing Q, EMB and CRJ, mainly east.

If someone has around 1250 hours with A's written, would they be closer to the sooner threshold?

Probably. But with that experience, I would apply to Flair and Porter, not Jazz.

Even with attrition in the west, Jazz will use the dormant YYC based pilots to cover YVR flying. Backfilling of vacancies may not be assured.

If you plan to start at Jazz, plan YYZ or YUL.

And choose the Embraer then apply to Porter after your first recurrent to fly the E2.

Do you have to wait until after your first recurrent :-)

Lol. Shiny new E1 sticker will definitely get you on the E2 :)

Its a wish list of type and base you want that every mini bid/backfill bid and major equipment bid looks at when assigning positions.

You basically put in order of priority what equipment, position and base you want. When your seniority number comes up then you get awarded that slot. Preference will vary from pilot to pilot.

It’s a little more complicated that the current response, the standing bid is where you put your preferences in case of an equipment bid.
You can bid current equipment with a preferred base, if you didn’t get your base at hiring or just want to move, you can also bid a different equipment or Captain on current or Captain on a different equipment.
Awarding of you bid preference is based on seniority but also equipment freeze, which I believe is four years unless your base wasn’t available at the time you were hired. There are other variables but you are not frozen on equipment type for an upgrade, any base any type for upgrade.
Probably some other caveats I can’t think of but that’s the gist.

Seconded. CdnAvater is correct. There are many factors and rules. Thanks for adding to it :)

April 24th I think is the new GS and May 15th after that (Currently few spots left in the 15th May GS)
