Did AC stop flying to Havana?
Hey,
As the topic title sais:
Did AC stop flying from YYZ and YUL to Havana? I was looking on the employee travel site to book a flight there, but it's not available. Is this a seasonal thing?
Cheers

I thought Cuba was verboten for employee travel.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
Air Canada Cuba flights are embargoed for MyID.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I don’t think HAV ever resumed following Covid.
It’s a very different passenger make-up to/from HAV than the beach resorts of Cuba, where the passenger must originate from Canada, (with added connections). On the HAV flight, the passenger could (and often did) originate from Cuba.
I’m not sure resident Cubans are cleared for international travel yet.

It did resume, but only for a month or two before being abruptly suspended again this winter.Crewbunk wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2023 7:35 pm I don’t think HAV ever resumed following Covid.

Good to know. I do recall seeing in the print timetable, once a week using a Rouge 321, just didn’t know if any ever flew.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I had no idea that was not allowed, as long as it doesn't originate to/from the USA. I thought I did see it a while ago (YYZ-HAV). None the less I may be wrong.
So the are no legal restrictions to travel there, as Canadians. I also assume we can do YYZ-MEX-HAV on Aeromexico or YYZ-PTY-HAV on COPA, right? American carriers do offer flights to Havana from MIA and JFK, but I think that's restricted to Cuban-Americans and/or persons that are authorized by the State Department, right?
Basically I just wanted to go to Havana for a few days to have some rum and smoke some cigars on a rooftop patio. Nothing extravagant, like a weeklong all inclusive at a 5 star resort.

Or you know, stop giving your money to a dictatorship that kills its people for wanting such luxuries like elections and something to eat other than what they give them through the ration booklet.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:35 amI had no idea that was not allowed, as long as it doesn't originate to/from the USA. Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I have non-reved to HAV, so I’m curious about “restrictions”. As long as the US isn’t in the PNR, I can’t see any problems.
Namely, one could book (or list) YYZ-HAV-YYZ and ORD-YYZ-ORD but not ORD-YYZ-HAV-YYZ-ORD.

Havana is a fascinating place, worth the effort to visit. I have stayed in a hotel, or once rented a house and rented a car.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:35 am Basically I just wanted to go to Havana for a few days to have some rum and smoke some cigars on a rooftop patio. And instead… give it to a broken democracy with a corrupt political duopoly who engages in modern day slavery (read the 13th Amendment) with for-profit prisons who’s victims stole less than the wage-theft that’s measured in the hundreds of billions of dollars by corporations who get off scot-free.Tbayer2021 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:55 amOr you know, stop giving your money to a dictatorship that kills its people for wanting such luxuries like elections and something to eat other than what they give them through the ration booklet.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:35 amI had no idea that was not allowed, as long as it doesn't originate to/from the USA. I don’t go to Cuba because the food sucks. That’s all.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
That would absolutely be objectively better. Go drive around Cuba with a sticker on your car that says "@#$! Diaz Canel". See if you make it from the airport to your hotel. Gotta love Canadians thinking they have it anywhere near as bad as your average Cuban. Lol pure comedy.‘Bob’ wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 9:14 amAnd instead… give it to a broken democracy with a corrupt political duopoly who engages in modern day slavery (read the 13th Amendment) with for-profit prisons who’s victims stole less than the wage-theft that’s measured in the hundreds of billions of dollars by corporations who get off scot-free.Tbayer2021 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:55 amOr you know, stop giving your money to a dictatorship that kills its people for wanting such luxuries like elections and something to eat other than what they give them through the ration booklet.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:35 am

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I admire Cuba. Canada should be more like Cuba. They have lots of doctors, it's amazing. Best healthcare system.
Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
The falls under the “somebody told me” category, but flights to HAV were suspended shortly after the route was relaunched due to the war in Ukraine. Supposedly there were a lot of connections from Asian markets in YYZ that aren’t being operated due to the closure of Russian airspace to Canadian airlines.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I've been to Havana before and loved it, but it was just a day trip from Varadero, where I stayed for a week at an all-inclusive. I will never do that again - all inclusive that is. Those types of vacations are not my thing, but just going "solo" to Havana, staying at a decent hotel and enjoying the Cuban culture would be amazing. I'm not interested in their politics, our politics or anyone elses' politics.Crewbunk wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 9:11 am I have non-reved to HAV, so I’m curious about “restrictions”. Rum, cigars, patios some amazing Cuban music (something along the lines of "Buena Vista Social Club" comes to mind) should make for a great time.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
That's interesting. We all know, historically speaking, about the political ties between Havana and Moscow. I would not think that was still relevant in 2023, but I may be wrong. Also as a non-relevant fact (to this discussion) I know Aeroflot was operating flights from SVO to HAV, the long way (North toward Murmansk, North of Norwegian airspace over the Barents / Norwegian Sea then down the Atlantic to Cuba.TheStig wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 12:43 pm The falls under the “somebody told me” category, but flights to HAV were suspended shortly after the route was relaunched due to the war in Ukraine. Oh well... like I said in a post above. Politics are not my focus here. "A good time" is the focus, and Cuba has plenty of culture, drinks, etc. to offer. I may have to postpone that trip till things around the world settle down, or just go via Latin America.
Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I believe the route was suspended in January 2022, so before the war in Ukraine. But that might have factored into the decision against restarting the route.
The embargo on staff travel to Cuba only applies to OAL, if I understand correctly.

Yeah not interested in their politics as long as you get what you want. Who cares if you're directly financing their oppressive regime. I wonder who makes those cigars and rum in Cuba. Lol jokers.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 9:49 pmI've been to Havana before and loved it, but it was just a day trip from Varadero, where I stayed for a week at an all-inclusive. 1. Who makes your sock, t-shirts and your clothes in general? You sure you don't have anything made in Vietnam, Bangladesh or India?
2. Who makes your electronics? Who mined the raw material to make your batteries? Who assembles your smartphone or computer? How many of the objects you own are made in China?
3. Do you drink coffee? Who farmed the beans? Where do you get your avocados from or bananas? You sure it's not from some Latin American country that oppresses their workers?
4. Where do you get your oil from? Who drilled for that in what country? How much of that is from Saudi Arabia, extracted by workers from the Indian subcontinent that work under "less than ideal conditions"?
Look at your every day things you consume and ask yourself "Where does this come from"? Then come to me and try to school me for wanting to go to Cuba to smoke some cigars and drink some rum.

Re: Did AC stop flying to Havana?
I asked recently and was told it was the lack of Jet A in Havana. The government is prioritizing the high demand tourist airports over Havana. The overnight fee for parking was also mentioned as being quite high.RoAF-Mig21 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2023 7:01 pm Hey,
