ATTN: Recruiters. THIS is how to write a job ad!

Post by ‘Bob’ »

Position: Captain/First officer on aircraft type.

Schedule: Full time/part time/seasonal/rotational/casual/contract/etc

Location: Self explanatory

Duties: All duties you expect the employee to do. If washing the boss's car or cleaning the toilet isn't in the job description, it shouldn't be expected.

Writeup. The advantages of the location (low COL, activities, voted #23 in unique towns in Saskatchewan, etc). A short company history and current activities.

Qualifications: Licence, endorsements, ratings, hours, other desired qualities.

Remuneration: Hourly/base/salary/overtime. If any of you are still paying by the mile you should quit aviation and get into the logistic business while rethinking your life. Remuneration in dollar amount and representative expectations (not our top captain who has been divorced twice and basically lives at work makes $200K a year... what can a normally scheduled new hire expect).

Benefits: Holidays, extended medical/dental, passes, pension, bonuses, profit sharing, etc.

What not to include? Big red flags!

Anything that isn't directly relevant to the job at hand.

Slandering the competition. Slandering other people's career choices.

I do that all the time on this board... but that's what this board is for amongst other things. I'm not acting as a professional trying to sell my organization to attract talent.

That's what a job ad is... it's a resume for companies. And pilots... the interview goes both ways!

Can you imagine if I wrote a cover letter and resume with glowing credentials and experience but told you to hire me over a Seneca or MRU grad? It might be totally relevant and true... but not in good taste.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

“Duties as assigned” is kind of a necessary evil that keeps them from having to list every little thing.
