Alternative for a floating dock

Post by tazin river »

Morning folks

We do have a camp North of Yellowknife that can only be accessed by plane. I end up either rebuilding or fixing the fix dock every 3-4 years due to ice damage during break-up. Happened again this year.

A floating dock that can be removed in the fall may be an option but would require a twin otter load of material, etc...

Any suggestions for alternatives?

Any of you using those docks on wheels?

How big of a dock are we talking? I feel like you have a ton of options with the newer styles/materials that jigsaw together so transportation is a little less cumbersome.

Yes that may be an option indeed...

Anyone using a ramp? Could use logs and lumber?

Its been awhile since I have been there, but the docks at Virginia Falls sound like exactly what you need. They're plastic cubes roughly a cubic foot that link together in infinite shapes and sizes to fit your needs, and I believe had integral tie down cleats but that could be my memory. Lots of Fort Simpson pilots on here, someone likely has a photo.

I did not like the cubed floating plastic docks, a lot of static. Use the 180 and haul in 8’ lumber and Styrofoam blocks.

The ones we are using are about 18” x18” x 8’..we would cut them into smaller blocks to fit the 185/180.

Had an aluminum wheeled dock at an old cottage. It was great. The planks all came off and we simply dragged the structure out out by hand. A 4 wheeler makes it even easier. Literally a 2 hr job each year.
Had a seperate wood bridging ramp that we laid down to smooth the transition to the dock once it was in place so we didn't have to mess with getting it aligned perfectly to the shore every time.
Most are built by aluminum fabrication shops.
