I did not trash flying in Europe. I simply challenged you on some of your tales about England. As I said, I was born there, family worked for BA, I went to british schools. I know what it is like. Not to mention, it is not an option for most on here. So stay with the program.
As for flying a light twin, the Emb is what I am flying at the moment and is simply one, among many other types and really who cares what it weighs? I suppose your penis is bigger too is it?
This started off as a thread about taking the odd risk to get ahead. If you have something to contribute like what you had to do to get where you are then offer it.

LOL JS you are funny. You say it doesn't matter what you fly blah blah.. This coming from a guy who has been bragging about his pay for 1/2 a thread? You can't brag about pay for 1/2 a thread and then turn around and accuse the other guy of penis measuring because he nailed you on the size of your itty bitty plane.
Congrats, you are now officially "AN AIR CANADA PILOT".

Read the entire thread. I am not bragging about pay I am simply demonstrating that sometimes it is a good idea to walk away from a 50K/year job to start at a lower salary with the opprtunity to make more down the road.
It is a pretty simple concept really. Contrary to what you and RB may think, size doesn't matter. It is quality of life that counts. One day when you grow up, you may realize that.

[quote="whipline"]Ivanhoe, I'm not exactly sure who brain washed you but my pay shouldn't be based on risk management, if you want that then so be it.
No brainwashing involved. It's called reading the writing on the wall. I suspect you havn't been in the business for too long and are unable to see the signs. It really is quite clear where all of this is going.
I've made my choice and you have every right to make your choice and place your bets where you see fit. Good luck to us both.

I thought I explained it in my first post but I'll try again. Airlines are asking and some are demanding that the employee's take on some of the risks involved in the form of risk sharing through lower wages and various ESP , option and profit sharing plans. Even AC has done it. In return for pay cuts and productivity increases they now have a form of profit sharing. Look at the MASSIVE cuts that UAL and Delta are facing. Wanna bet that when the negotiating is over that the deal with the pilots involves some sort of profit sharing?
The days of "I'm an airline pilot , so pay me X$$$" are over. There is only one way that it will change and that is if the customer is willing to pay more for a ticket to subsidize our pay scales. Fat chance.

No, I didn't cut my ties to credit cards, bank acconts etc. If I did then I wouldn't be a resident of this great nation. Why would I want to become of citizen of 'nowhere'?
My point to all of this tax free stuff is that if it is tax free, great, I just haven't experienced the free part of it. If you have to cut all ties to bank accounts, visas, etc, then virtually anyone can earn tax-free income, but, that same person will have no OHIP, no right to vote, etc. Not worth it to me.
Gel:
You hit the nail on the head, the government plays by their own rules and if you don't stick up for yourself they will walk all over you.
One last thing. How does someone working overseas making "tax free" money come to Canada and deposit this money if they can't even have a Canadian bank account without being considered a factual resident? Boy, I hate tax time

Well that's just it: you can't. My father works for a Canadian company, but by the nature of his work much of it is considered money made outside Canada and is therefore not taxable... providing he is not a Canadian resident. My parents are Bahamian residents with a second home in the States (they are not American and do not have the right to live there), do their banking with HSBC (but not a Canadian account) and use BUPA for health insurance. I don't think they care about voting 'cause there's no one worth voting for anyway.
As Paulie said, you can't have a single tie to Canada.

Neophyte,
Yes I agree with Gel - the governement plays by their own rules and sometimes they can be the smartest crooks out there. They will do everything in their power to find a way to nail you.
Its a tough call to make in terms of severing your residential ties to Canada such as losing your OHIP etc.
As opposed to being a Citizen of "nowhere" well... you will always be a Citizen of Canada if thats what you currently hold - you can't lose your Canadian Citizenship unless you formally denounce it, which can be a pain in the ass.
But none the less CCRA can only tax Canadians on their "worldley" income if they maintain residential ties to Canada. Unlike in the U.S. where the IRS requires all American Citizens to file on their worldley income no matter where they have their residence (fileing does not necessarily mean being double taxed however, depending if you pay tax in another country or not)
Like I said its somewhat of a pain in the ass and many people have been screwed because they might of missed something along the way. I have studied a far bit of tax law and it is something that I am faced with right now because my wife is an American and I'm Canadian. We were lucky enough to find an accountant who specializes in cross border tax law for both Canada and the U.S. so this helps a lot.
Being over taxed sucks!

quote from JS
"Sorry bud, Gulf Air is a shit hole made up of ex-pat pilots who can't get a job anywhere else. "
That statement says a lot about you JS, you would never have the backbone to say that to some ones face from GF.
This started off discussing wages at AC, your assertions are patently false about your wages, ( I am being polite).
An AC 320 Captain makes about 140K a year before taxes, you make about 100K a year before taxes. Anyone working in the gulf takes home 3 to four times what you guys at AC make. There are no compounds in Dubai or Bahrain. It looks like you were turned down by GF and or EK and now your bitter. If you dont want to live in the gulf thats your choice, but there are hundreds of Canadians working here, and at last count according to EK HR there were 700 applicants from Air Canada.
You guys agreed to a B scale, now your stuck with it for the rest of your career. The cuts are not going to stop, AC has yet to turn a profit on operations and as soon as all the furniture is sold Milton will be back looking for more. Your are flying a 100 passenger jet for regional wages, you guys have given up the whole farm for nothing, what would a DC-9 Captain be making if they still had them?
Good luck...your gonna need it.

Folks:
This forum is (hopefully) for the dissemination of information and sharing of ideas. Some of the posts floating about contain misinformation, willfully or otherwise. If you wish to put forth info you have or correct something you feel to be false, fine... but why all the bickering and mud-slinging? Each of us is apparently quite passionate about whose airplanes we drive and what country we do it out of and -- of course!! -- what we get paid to do it... so wonderful, be proud and enjoy it! Doesn't mean everyone out there who doesn't do what you do and doesn't agree with your viewpoint is a big idiot who needs to be called out and lambasted! Chacun son gout!
Man it's get ridiculous in here sometimes...

Gel/Pauliewalnuts,
Thanks once again for your inputs.
As far as I am concerned, there is no issue for me. I will never denounce my citizenship and I will always (worst case scenerio) be a factual resident.
It is also a non issue because I no longer live/work out of country.
I just get worked up when I hear tax free, regardless of where you live. It is like the wise man says: "nothing in life is free" You can pay now or you can pay later. I guess it is time to get me an account in the Caymans!
Have a great weekend!

You work for BA. $400k CDN. Ok, that's with the British pound at 2.5 times the cdn dollar. Sure it's still alot of coin. But take into account the cost of living in Britain and I bet the lifestyles are comparable between our top end earners and yours. AC has done a remarkable job of going through CCAA and coming out of it and be where we are today. I keep hearing it was "almost curtains". Fact is we didn't need to go into CCAA. It was RM's way of putting pressure on us and restructuring all the contracts and leases. An "easy" way out if you will. Anyway, not the best, not the worst. Just a great place. We all have to justify our decisions in life. You're doing fine at BA. Great, AC is good to us too. Comparing the two is a waste of time. The two are at the top of their game.

Well well..............another guy telling an AC pilot how much he makes. Hey man, an A320 Captain ain't makin 140K per year. I can guarantee you that unless he bids reserve and doesn't turn a wheel for the year. As for me making 100K per year, sorry again but you must be right as I wouldn't have a clue.
If you want to challenge someone, why not go check out RB-211 who claims to be making 200,000 pounds a year ( $400,000 CDN ) as a 777 F/O. I think that would qualify for the Guiness Book of World Records.
Sorry if my Gulf Air comment offended you. Probably the wrong choice of words but was not meant as a personal attack. I simply noticed that the pilot population was made up in large part of ex pat Aussies who had been fired during their strike. ( again, not a personal attack ) I also noted that when AC was in CCAA, Gulf Air management flew over to Toronto like a group of vultures hoping to pick up some cheap labour. ( again, not meant to offend you, just a fact. )
So far rider, why not put down some facts seeing as you politely say my assertions about my wages are patently false.
To answer your DC-9 question, the E190 which is just a little heavier than the DC-9 pays $135/hr. Not what the pay was back in 2000, which was around $150/hr ( DC-9 ) I agree. However, not bad when compared to the haircuts going on south of the border. You seem to think that AC is the only company that suffered through wage rollbacks.
"AC has yet to turn a profit........." I see too that you are a financial analyst. Well, I agree, I would not buy stock in an airline but AC is looking pretty good when compared to other Legacy carriers at the moment. The key being " at the moment" but I think all airlines are fragile at this point.
I am happy that you are enjoying the Middle East and as I said, wrong choice of words. If you would, why don't you enlighten us as to how long you have been there, what you are flying and what the earnings are like. I would be interested to see if it is the same as my buddy in the 777 left seat at Emirates.

Heh Strappe can you read? Do not quote me if you can not do it speaking the truth. You shat on the guys at Gulf and someone had to challenge you. You are now back pedalling and mis-quoting people. Tsk Tsk....
This post was started about people turning down AC for different reasons. Yes its a good investment in the long run but for many people it is simply not affordable. WJ and JAZZ are not any better really. I know a couple of people who simply said no as they could not afford the move plain and simple. A morgatge, 2 young kids and a wife that looks after the kids means 40K a year will just not cut it for some. Then again for some it will.
Pilots wages in Canada are too low. Starting wages are terrible at the airline level. Maybe the next generation of young Canadian flyers can put all the bad feelings to bed and things can get better.
Tony just to clarify the wages here its about 50K-170K a year at BA in £. Double it (yes this changes) and you get 100K-350K or so. Our new FO's walk away easily with 6-9K a month CAD. Cost of living is higher and yes both are at the top of the game but our higher starting wages and much larger fleet of wide bodies makes it different game.
In my opinion the ease of getting licenced in Canada means there are simply too many people out there. The supply is much greater than the demand. Fix this and you will see terms in conditions in Canadian aviation improve. Canada has a very long and proud aviation history which I enjoyed being part of. It just needs to get a little better for the people that work so hard to get to the top.

You could use a dose of your own medicine. You keep converting your salary in an effort to say hey look how much more I make over here. If I convert mine to Rupees, I could do the same thing.
As far as back pedalling goes, I am man enough to apologise for offending someone. My comment about Gulf Air was directed more towards the company. It was not my intent to offend those working there.
You love to sit and bash Canada, Canadian Aviation, Air Canada and the pilots in Canada, I point out your reference of it being too easy to get a licence.
50K to start at BA huh....
Sounds awesome if you convert it CDN but the fact is, you don't live here. Convert it to Rupees and your new hires are millonaires. That brings me to my original point in this entire thread before you hijacked it.
Starting Salaries in most airlines are low but increase dramatically. The days of getting a top salary from day one are gone. I will ask the original question........where is this mysterious airline that pays the top dollar right from day one? 50K ( stirling ) in England is a damn sight harder to live on than 42K ( CDN ) in Canada.

Not to detract from the arguing... but what's going on with the majors in Europe these days? I think we all know what AC's been up to, and it's common knowledge that most American carriers are in dire straits, but I don't hear much about operations like BA, Lufthansa, etc. Are they doing well? Expanding... hiring? Much concern about outfits like Easyjet trying to muscle in? Anyone on furlough in Europe? Wussup?

JS. You and I seem to bash heads a bit because we are likely the types that can't stand people full of BS. I call a spade a spade as you do. Your comments about Gulf Air or pilots in the middle east were out of line and I applaud you for admitting it was a mistake.
I convert it to CAD so people in Canada can understand how low wages can be. Yes you grew up here and if memory serves me correct your old man flew for BA but even you know that the pay over here is better. Top end similar but bottom end not even close.
If you think living on 50K stirling is harder than 50k CAD you have been spending too much time knocking them back. My buying power for houses, cars, holidays and all is much higher. Canada is becoming more expensive by the day not to mention tax is high. For reference in my case income tax is 27%. The cost of living in Toronto and Vancouver are in the top in North America. Try and buy a house within 40 miles of YVR on 50k a year.
AC starting pay is too low given the job and experience required to get it. Period. As for your comments about me bashing Canada and Canadian pilots I suggest you read my post again and see that clearly I was not doing this! Getting a licence in Canada is as easy as finishing high school. I know, because i did it. It aint helping in the whole over supply problem.
Gelbisch. No pilots in Europe on lay off except maybe at Alitalia. It is losing tons of money but the state supports it much to the shagrin of the EU. BA, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM etc. are steaming along. Air France and KLM merged as did SAS and Lufthansa. Most people betting BA merges with Iberia. The weakness in the American carriers is opening up opportunites for carrieres here (as the same for AC) to grab some market share. Europe is a good place to do business, at least in aviation. To be honest I really don't know why.....The low cost sector is crazy. Ryan and Easy are getting massive with no sign of slowing down.
JS. Wind your neck in and we can have usefull conversation.

I think I will just take the high road on that one. Not to mention that the majority in this audience do not have the legal entitlement to live and work in Europe anyway.
So Toronto and Vancouver are in the top for most expensive cities in North America? I'll leave that one alone too.
What is the average house price in London or Manchester these days then?
Standby for new atis message
JS,
Your debating skills amaze me. Vancouver and Toronto are both compared to the rest of North America expensive places to live, and getting worse.
London prices scary and would not live there if you put a gun to my head. Manchester is cheap but again would not live up there. Plenty of other nice places to buy in England. Lots of BA pilots live in Europe with many in France as tax for pilots is very low.
Back pedalling again. If you have any desires to negoiate for ACPA think twice.......
AC starting pay is crap. Admit it and we can put this to bed.

AC starting pay is crap. Admit it and we can put this to bed.

Tony, just for the record I have not been turned down by mainline. This is a thread about pilots turning mainline down. You seem very fond of taking the easy way out. Get what you want and screw everyone else. As long as there are people out there with your thought process there won't be any progress for pilots in this country. The bottom denominator in all of this is that we are all pilots trying to make a descent living be it at AC, Jazz, or Westjet. You support the team that pays the bills. It's not that we want to steal your flying, but we have no choice if we want to survive. ACPA wanted it this way. And i'm not always a red guy. Sometimes i'm orange, yellow or green.Gurundu.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but....
You sound like someone who yearns to fly the big stuff. If so, the mainline is hiring. Or did you already go down that road and it didn't work out? Why hope for a GS? There's a much easier way to get that dream job. Forget the backroom deals, wheeling and dealing politics. Just throw in a resume'!!!! Better still, ask some of your buddies to drop that law suit and maybe ACPA will listen. I know, the lawsuit has nothing to do with ALPA. Trouble is, the guys doing the suing just happen to be ALPA members, some of them even being the big wigs in the group. So my friend, it's up to you. You can take the easy way or keep dreaming about something that will never happen. Just some advise from one Red guy to another.
