Seneca
Morris says she knew right away the plane was too low and began running as she watched it go through trees and crash beside the Chilliwack Motor Inn, just south of the Chilliwack Municipal Airport.
Morris says she and a co-worker called 911 and directed emergency vehicles through a field at the back of the inn to the crash site.
The registration number on the plane’s tail indicates the aircraft, which appeared badly damaged, is a Piper Seneca owned by SkyQuest Aviation, a flight school based in Langley. It was built in 1972.

There are several photos online of this aircraft, C-GTYH, pa34-200,
Don't let your wife talk you out of buying an airplane,
Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06
From were it went down it certainly looks like one of 2 possibilities......
1) either they were doing engine out training on takeoff/landing and it went just horribly wrong or
2) they had an actual engine problem at takeoff/landing.
RIP to those on board.

So an aircraft operated by a flight school specifically to train pilots on multi-engine crashed. You'd think an engine problem would be the one contingency they'd be able to handle. If it was an engine issue it opens up a barrel of worms.

I don't know what happened - I'm just theorizing....but look at the photo and see where the hotel is in relation to the airport. It didn't dive in from high altitude...they were way low skimming the ground before they hit.

The LH prop is badly bent while the RH prop has very little damage. Neither is feathered.
Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06
The local evening TV news reported that a witness observed the aircraft ""turn upside down in the air" just before it crashed.

No, that's very common in a multi when the speed is allowed to drop below Vmca
Safety starts with two
Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06
Why? Classic Vmc roll from pilots trying to keep airborne on one engine. There’s endless YouTube videos of exactly that.Tony Jerry wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 12:39 pmHard to believe.RVR1200 wrote: The local evening TV news reported that a witness observed the aircraft ""turn upside down in the air" just before it crashed.
Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06
Perhaps you might believe this. Some years ago, I upgraded my qualifications with a centreline multiengine rating specifically to fly a local businessman’s Cessna Skymaster, the push-pull twin. You don’t see them around much anymore. I wasn’t interested in a multiengine rating but I needed to fly the Skymaster. The ink was barely dry on my license when the owner sold the aircraft. Since I had spent the money to obtain the centreline-thrust rating, the operator felt obligated to give me training on one of their Piper Senecas identical to the one being discussed here. I felt at the time that my training on the Seneca was rushed because the operator was not receiving any income from my flying and needed to just get it done. Nevertheless, things went well until the day of the flight test with the examiner. I was demonstrating a simulated engine-out landing on runway 18 at Pitt Meadows as part of the requirements for the license when the tower controller stuck a Cessna 150 in front of us on final. We needed to slow slightly for the 150 but when I added power on the good engine to maintain the glidepath, I was at Vmca. With one engine out, the aircraft could not be held straight on final approach with the rudder as it started turning and rolling to the left. We were within seconds of flipping upside down. Based on my experience, the TV witness' remarks are reasonable. As they say in the movies, "I've been there. Done That. Got the logbook entry to prove it."

Does anybody know if that school has cameras on board to use video as part of a de-brief ? If there is a camera, and the data in it's card is useable, wont be a lot of questions left for any investigators after they get the video.

Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06
Photo taken from unit 24 inside the motel adjacent to crash site. Blackberries 10-15 ft high. Many years since they have been cut back. The chief flight instructor had a pulse when first responders finally reached them, he died a little less than an hr later. At midnight they had just finished extracting all 3 bodies. Very sad. So very close to the airport, you can see part of the runway and some of the hangars from the same window, looking right (northeast). Picture was taken with cellphone out of bathroom window of Unit 24 in Chilliwack Motor Inn, the 25 unit motel adjacent crash site, immediately following crash, facing northwest. Witness who took photo recalls hearing the roaring engine get louder and louder, up until moment of impact, which they thought for sure was going to strike the building. 4 very old, tall cedar trees at the edge of blackberries had their tops clipped off by aircraft. Possibly adjusting its course (?)... Anyways... we live here at the motel....AMA.

C-GTYH, a SkyQuest Aviation Ltd. Piper PA-34-200 Seneca aircraft (serial number 34-7250160)
departed Langley Regional Airport (CYNJ), BC, on a visual flight rules training flight with one
instructor, one student, and one passenger on board. After conducting some maneuvering
exercises and one circuit at Chilliwack Airport (CYCW), BC, the aircraft commenced a missed
approach. During the attempted missed approach, the aircraft rolled into a right bank, continued
the roll until it struck trees and terrain in a nose down and inverted attitude. The three occupants
were fatally injured. The aircraft was substantially damaged and there was no post-impact fire. The
TSB deployed investigators and the investigation is ongoing.
