More power to you

Post by IndianJones »

Hello aviators,
I am looking to move to Canada and fly one of those metal tubes soon. Came across Avcanada recently and it breaks my heart to see the starting wages. Where I fly we do not have a union, the pay is 'OK' and I hope and pray that the great work all of you are putting towards raising the standards bears fruits soon.
Cheers to all of you who are sacrificing your rest hours working towards conditions for a better future and for people like me who look forward to joining AC, Iff the wages improve post negotiations!

On top of the poor wages in Canada it's also very hard to find somewhere to live. I can't recommend leaving your current position and country to come here.

Which country? I guarantee you are better off staying put or going to the US than coming to work for an airline here as a new hire FO. Cost of living is insane compounded with the low pay and high taxes.

Yes I agree with you, the starting wages are bad everywhere in Canada and the prices are going through the roof. Taxes are as much in my country as in Canada, and sometimes even worse.
US is not an option for me as of now as I have family in Canada.
I sometimes myself wonder why am I putting in the effort to convert my license and come over when I am one of the highest paid NB captains in my country. However, there are certain things like QOL that I am looking forward to if I move over to Canada.
One small example is how here, Standbys, if not called for flight, are not credited towards monthly hours so basically I am flying/on standby for 25/26 (30/31) days in a month. My understanding is once you gain some seniority in Canada you are able to sort of manage your roster.

Please do as much research as possible prior to this decision. AC has 3 major bases and 1 minor, all with very high cost of living. Currently 4 year flat pay. You can commute but those costs will add up. Commuting for reserve is challenging on your home life.

You can PM me if you want to know further as a single example might sound absurd for moving countries, I would love to hear your side first hand as I do not know any aviators in Canada.

You'd fit right in with Cargojet. They have a handful of Indian Captains who transcended from a Bollywood movie.

Eventually qol as a Canadian pilot may be better, but be prepared for your income not going as far and if you get a job with Air Canada you either need to have over a million dollars or access to that much in financing to buy a home at one of their bases or commute and spend extra days on the road for the rest of your career.

As well, pilots in Canada don’t get anywhere the same respect as they would in most other countries. Just take a look at how CBSA treats incoming pilots in uniform. 🤦‍♂️

If you are investing all the time and money to leave your country, I would recommend putting the time and effort into the US.

What a douche comment to make.

You call yourself a pro?

Unbelievable, not just a lack of tack, an utter lack professionalism!

(Glad that most of us don’t live in your insular bubble bud)

There is actually a Bollywood star that flies/flew for Cargojet so not necessarily a douche comment. Gursewak (Gary) Mann.

Simply put, alkaseltzer is a RACIST. There is plenty of Indian pilots at AC, and growing everyday! I suspect that makes him mad, so he wishes they'd go to Cargojet instead. SHAMEFUL!

Well, that's quite the plot twist!

Cool!

I don't think it's racist if they are literally from Bollywood. But it brings up a good point, if you are going to move to another society you are likely to experience some racism as part of that experience. You need to factor in all the pros and cons.
