Rigpiggy -----neither the Yukon nor BC governments have a clue where 90% of the wrecks and reported missing a/c are. There's 55 alone JUST from the USAAF that went missing over BC during WW2 that still remain unfound. The Yukon is loaded with'em that went missing over that territory. I'm reponsible for finding a total of 10 myself over the last 40 years and some of them were fairly famous disappearances. SOME, not all of the ones I found, remain in Canada in various Museums, BUT that's not 10% of the total.

You name me ONE WW2 or older a/c that the Yukon government sold to scrap and I'll pass that on to The WCAM in Winnipeg, the PAM in Vancouver and the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa and I"ll guarantee you that they've shipped their last one to scrap.......bet on it. Any a/c of that type or one significant to Canadian aviation history that is found, is required to be reported to those Museums before sell-off or scrap. That started after they all became aware of the a/c moving out of Canada for places south........and some of those were Canadian aviation history. Maybe you and others don't care, but with no apologies accorded to anyone, me and a significant number of others do.......and that's how the a/c Canada DOES HAVE, get to be in those museums and are put back together with ALL skilled and knowledgeable volunteer help. That's mentioning nothing at all about valuable to people like Bobby Diemart in Carmen, MB and the WarBird Heritage group in Hamilton.

I find your statement about the Yukon government very interesting because at this moment they are having "a pissing contest" over such an a/c with some private American and his almost-completed attempt to raise such a one from a lake in the Yukon. He claims it's still American property and they make claim to it because they have it, it's been on their property for almost 70 years and is now part of Canadian WW2 aviation history. Federal government is also in on the deal and are saying "touch nothing buddy".

The Fairchild 82 JTP talked about had been heli-lifted out and flown to YZF now in the hands of Buffalo Joe. There was rumour of restoration but no idea if thats been scraped or just delayed.

Another C-46 in Northern MB other than the Shamattawa one mentioned; another one I stumbled across was a Banshee in a wooded area around CQ3.

Safe Flying,
Cheers

Almost forgot, some of our Newfoundland friends may be able to shed some light on this one....not sure of make/model or circumstances surrounding this occurrence but apparently there are some bones located on the approach into Argentia, NF.... visible in the water at low tide.

there's a beech 18 to the north west of YPL out near tarp hill by a river that runs by there. There's also a DC3 with it's wing broken off just off the YPL approach. You can see the wing, and then a distance away the rest of the AC.

I remember reading a story that happened back in the late 80's. This guys is out hiking in the woods out near Ottawa somewhere and comes accross a Voodoo in the bush. It looks robbed and vandalized, but is intact, which confuses him a little.

Anyways, the guy is excited about what he's found in the middle of absolute nowhere and heads back to the car and heads home. He gets home, calls a bunch of people, grabs the camera and runs out the door, back to take some pics of the jet.

They all get back to the site and there's NOTHING there, not even a trace of this Voodoo. So his friend tell him he's full of shit, etc, and that's the end of that.

Apparently 407 Sqn was doing heavy lift excercises and dropped an old Voodoo airframe out in the bush and told the next Chinook crew to go find it and bring it home. In the time it took for the guy to go home and grab his camera and his friends, the chopper had come and gone.

Thanks for the welcome and negative on the TSB. Just been around a few years and have good ears for gossip, good eyes for spotting....and I'm a bit nosey to boot.

I remembered another story but its more on the missing a/c side of things. A pby or something of the sorts going down near Gunasao lk MB with a load of Eskimo kids that was never found, anyone have details?

Also a good place for looking at old wrecks is Kenmore Air in WA state, when i was last there they had a dh2 they rescued from Vietnam, they had a bit of skin work to do on it as it had been riddled with bullets.

Don't know if they are still there but a couple of Harvards in the bush behind what used to be Calm Air's hangar complex in Lynn Lake (Eldon Lake). Purchased from Crown Assets when the RCAF retired the HArvard Many parts were useable on the Norseman. Many old Beech 18's were parted out by bush operators. In some parts of Saskatchewan, there were various WW11 ex-military aircraft canabalized by farmers for cable, wheels etc. 12 gallons of glycol in a Hurricane. Made 24 gallons of coolant for a tractor.

I was in Springfield, MA last week and the FBO had a plaque in the pilot’s room as a memorial to a local pilot. Next to his picture was an article about a DC4 (or maybe it was C46, I can't remember) that landed on the ice on Hudson's Bay in the fifties. The insurance company felt it was written off, and paid the owner his money. The owner then decided to try and salvage the plane himself by covering the ice around the aircraft with sawdust to slow the melting process. His plan was the save the ice under the aircraft, and then in the spring float it back to land.

I was wondering if anyone has heard this story, and if it actually worked.

Heard that same story many times and finally read where it worked. Towed the berg and airplane to Churchill, I beleave, loaded it on the train and salvaged the DC4.

CAPGEN,

the Voodoo was actually the property of 450 Chinook squdron based at CFB Uplands. 407 was the Edmonton Chinook squadron.

Just before the squadron disbanded, the carried the Voodoo back to the base. It ended up at a piantball place in the Rockland area. A friend of mine liberated a panel off of it there.

Never did find out the tail number on the aircraft.

Pretty close but not exactly correct. 407 is a proud Maritime Patrol squadron that based in CFB Comox BC. The Chinook squadron in Edmonton was 447 Sqn. Interestingly enough that Voodoo claimed it's only victim after it was removed from active service. 450 Sqn had a "play area" out by Richmond Ont where they kept the Voodoo and other items used for slung load training. Somebody in a Cessna came by at low altitude to have a look at the neat airplane sitting out in the field and misjudged his height to the point where he hit a tree. Rather amusing to this point but I believe the gentleman was killed in the accident.

The airports of Springbank and Abbottsford have cool old boneyards. I have heard of some wrecks in the lower Mainland BC area. The Mount Cheam I hear there is an old Lockheed Electra that went in with all souls onboard adn is still there desiganted a graveyard.

There is also a Trans Canada Airlines Lockheed that crashed on Coliseum IN Vancouver in 1951 with 18 onboard and was missing until 1996 when a couple of Hikers Found it.

I knew a Guy a few years back that had the GPS coordinates of a whole bunch of wreck sites.......Kind of a morbid facination but I can see what he found interesting about it.

Endless, can you be any more specific where the one out by Tarp Hill is? I'd be interested in checking it out. Also, where is the DC-3? Off the approach to 09 or 27? I'm off the water here so dont get there often, but might be able to check it out some day.

Definately nothing at Weibenville, I fly over it almost daily, only the odd Hawker in there loading up with fuel.

There is another a/c just off the north side of pickle lake, not sure what it is.

A wrecked Hawker at the airport in YPL.

It's an Avro York. There's a few pieces left of an Aero Commander at Hall Beach. Some remains at Iqaluit.

There's a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer at an abandoned strip near Terrace.

There are some Fokker Super Universal remains south of Calgary. There used to be some Barkley Grows stored outdoors in Calgary. You can see them east of the approach for rwy 34 at YYC. Somewhere around 16th avenue.

There were some remains of a Globemaster in Iqaluit.

Port Hardy has a boneyard a couple of miles from the airport with a Twin Otter and a Goose.
