2023 earnings
Every year on Airline Pilot Central, there is a thread with total earnings for pilots. I thought I would start one here so pilots in Canada know what their counterparts around our country are making. Transparency between pilots will only help us all.
Year 12 WestJet 737 Captain. Live in base. Did one day of overtime. Had a little flight release for union work, so my actual hard flying hours are lower than they would normally be.
Total straight time base pay(including sick time and vacation)- $263,000
Premium (overtime)- $1350
Company portion of Savings plan (resistered/non-registeed/TFSA) - $35,200
Collective Agreement retro payment- $16,500
Taxable benefits (Parking/life ins. etc)- $1215
Profit Share- $6900
Total taxable income- $324,165
Per diems/dry cleaning- $5100
Hours flown 310
Annual credits-942

Re: 2023 earnings
Air Canadas smallest airplane weighs twice what mine does and if I went over there today my gross pay would be cut in half. Man that hurts.flyingcanuck wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 3:17 pm Year 1 Flat Pay AC

I don’t want to be one to just swoop in and benefit off ALPAs hard work but man I just cannot afford that pay cut. It’s too much.
I really hope you guys get the big win you deserve. Good on you for fighting the good fight.

He's a year 1 FO, you're a captain, training captain even. Not really comparing apples with applesPropDog wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 11:17 pmAir Canadas smallest airplane weighs twice what mine does and if I went over there today my gross pay would be cut in half. Re: 2023 earnings
It’s absolutely comparing apples to apples because if I went to Air Canada tomorrow I’d be getting hired as a…. Year 1 FO. Not a direct entry training captain.Me262 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 4:19 amHe's a year 1 FO, you're a captain, training captain even. It’s not like Air Canada is hiring inexperienced pilots. Until recently they preferentially hired people with 705 PIC and training/checking experience. It’s a pretty excessive pay cut.
Re: 2023 earnings
BUT I will concede that that comparison is based on me working a loooot of OT and him not so it’s not exactly a 50% pay cut. Still. 65k for an experienced pilot to fly right seat on a transport category jet is big sad man. Big sad for us all
Re: 2023 earnings
Just an FYI exact T4 earnings can be used to identify to the CRA as a possible security question so it’s best to round off numbers.
Re: 2023 earnings
Year 5 Captain at Sunwing.
Base pay - $171 200
Overtime - $64 000
Vacation excess pay - $3500
Deployment allocation - $15 500
Per diem and other allowances - $3100
Total - $257 300
I didn’t include my company RRSP match. I’m usually not much of an OT guy but I’m still digging out from covid so I’ve been taking a fair bit. About half of the OT I’ve taken have resulted in my being removed from another day so I still didn’t work too much. Averaged 11 days per month for the year.

I disagree. I think it can give people a much better picture of the state of the industry and individual companies than just a dry payscale.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 10:39 am This thread is beer league hockey shower room. I get what you mean, totally get it, however, this transparency is actually helpful for junior guys like myself trying to make the correct moves.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 10:39 am This thread is beer league hockey shower room. Total $160K, of which about $90K is base pay, $40K is overtime and the rest is per diems, allowances (dry cleaning, transportation etc) and premiums for committees/tasks/projects.

Wow, with a shortage of instructors, I would have thought the pay would have gone up.Hysteria wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 2:04 pmI get what you mean, totally get it, however, this transparency is actually helpful for junior guys like myself trying to make the correct moves.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 10:39 am This thread is beer league hockey shower room. That works out to 55/hr of logged time, how many hours would you say you worked doing ground instruction or walk around or whatever else they assigned to you?

Re: 2023 earnings
I like the way you roll. Same here. Haven’t broke 300 hrs of block time this year.
Complex systems won’t survive the competence crisis
Re: 2023 earnings
Yr 1 Porter E2 Training Captain - 415 flight hours this year.
Set to finish with approximately $260,000 (waiting for last pay stub for 15th onward). If I was hungrier, I could've crested 300k but I'm definitely on the lower end of pay for the training Captain group. Lifestyle and family are too important.
Recall, we went from 122k, to 156k and now we're at 177k min guarantee @ 75 hours as of July.
Breakdown:
OT - $70K (trainers were scheduled OT for most of the year - finally calming down).
Per diems - $4300 is added to those numbers (it's on the stub).
DSP Match - $5,700
Performance Pays - $600.00
Training Premium - $6500.00

But, I guess it’s cool since we all play in the same league.
Well…..Apart from AC, they’re in the NHL.
Looking at your numbers… not so bad. Room for improvement, but what airline doesn’t?
Re: 2023 earnings
Our hourly rate is much much less than that - but yeah, the 22K gross is between flying and ground. Fair amount of ground time between teaching ground school, pre-flight briefings, and solo supervision. Maybe ~ 200 hours ground.cdnavater wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 2:24 pmWow, with a shortage of instructors, I would have thought the pay would have gone up.Hysteria wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 2:04 pmI get what you mean, totally get it, however, this transparency is actually helpful for junior guys like myself trying to make the correct moves.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 10:39 am This thread is beer league hockey shower room. Re: 2023 earnings
Are you still seeing demand as a flight instructor regarding new students training or is it fairly cutthroat to get, and keep students?Hysteria wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 12:43 amOur hourly rate is much much less than that - but yeah, the 22K gross is between flying and ground.
