Dedicated or seat swap?
Thought it was a standard for years, but the lines are becoming blurred as newer guys are coming online, so lets see whats out there in todays world.
For op’s with both seat qualified individuals, do you….
1: Stay in the seat you are assigned for the the trip (rotating pic for trips so everyone gets a turn)
2: Swap seats every other leg or day for stick time (presuming left seat only flies)
3: Work towards a more inclusive and learning type environment, inviting lower time pilots to become right seat qualified in hopes they stay around a few years and eventually upgrade, negating the need to assign Pic duties (One Captain, one Fo, airline style)
If option one, does thou who sits placed in the right seat, fly every other leg or are they/them tied strictly to the push to talk duties?

Re: Dedicated or seat swap?
We’re all Captains on our bird. Designated PIC flies left seat out, we swap seats, designated SIC flies it left seat back. Crew sched figures out who’s PIC/SIC. This way we save the client money by reducing the wear and tear on the FO’s yoke and trim switch.

Re: Dedicated or seat swap?
We’re all dual seat qualified. Swap seats every leg, unless we’re doing a customs stop or something that involves a really quick turn and then we’ll make up for it on later legs. Try to get everyone equal PF/PM legs on a trip ideally. If we’re co-captaining crew sched picks the PIC and they’re the designated for the trip (flight planning, customs etc.) but doesn’t change the seat swap situation.Minimums wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 1:51 pm Thought it was a standard for years, but the lines are becoming blurred as newer guys are coming online, so lets see whats out there in todays world.

Re: Dedicated or seat swap?
PIC flies Out
SIC flies Back
If the SIC is green then fly from the right seat for a year until after first recurrent. Get left seat qualified at 1st recurrent swap seats after that.
Eventually just alternate days as experience grows.

Light jet , overall expected flt time for a week long trip. Usually do it on a 2 or 3 day left seat then 2-3 days right seat . Avoid swaping Seats constantly. Hard on mic n phone jacks headsets too / swap pf/pm legs every flt but not seats. For example on a 30hour flt work week works out very well.
Everyone gets some good pic time left seat and keeps both crew sharp, promotes good crm by having understanding of workload your fellow crew member

Re: Dedicated or seat swap?
I have flown CoCaptain as the vast majority of my corporate flying so far; we swap seats regularly - but 'regularly' kinda depends on the flight legs and the trips that month etc. It generally is a hassle to swap seats after a short hop, especially if we are doing a quick turn - but we have that option if we want it. Nobody I fly with is particularly worried about logging PIC time at this stage of the game.
Typically we'd swap seats every other leg, but that changes on occasion for a variety of reasons - the great thing about CoCaptains is that you have that flexibility. Also, over the course of a long-term work-wife relationship, it's going to go through ebbs and flows where maybe one person is super keen on flying for a week or two for whatever reason; when that happens we totally go with it because it's also important (I think) to keep that spark of enjoyment going - the "this is so cool, I can't believe I get paid to do this" part that I hope we have all felt at least a few times during our flying careers; good morale pays dividends all over the place for everyone involved.
