Fastest way to YOW
Hello,
What is the best way to get based at YOW?
I'm new, I appropriate your insight very much. I'm just about ready to get my first pilot job. Not quite at 500 hours yet. My biggest goal starting out would be to get base at YOW. Porter is the only company with a base there that I can see. FO/CA, Q/E are all secondary at this point to me. I really want to avoid the whole commuting thing as much as possible.
I'm wondering,
A) Is it best to get a job at Jazz since they're hiring at 500 hours? Then apply at Porter when I get to 1000? Then apply to transfer to YOW?
B) Is it better to get CA at Jazz before applying to Porter to get to YOW faster?
C) Or skip Jazz or something else all together?
Obviously I'm very green, any help would be terrific. Thanks very much

Re: Fastest way to YOW
Skip Jazz, it would just draw out the process. Just get 500 more hours doing whatever you’re doing and go straight to Porter. It will most likely be faster unless you’re flying very very little at your current job.RayJr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:00 pm Hello,

Re: Fastest way to YOW
YOW Dash 8 operations has seen some major turnover due to folks leaving for the jet.
Of the current FO's, 5 of the 22 on property have more than a year with Porter. 17 are fairly new!
Soft cap of 25-30 FO's in YOW based on trying to have equal numbers for scheduling purposes.
Porter normally will hire you at 1000TT, as long as you pass the interview (and potential sim evaluation).
Having an internal reference does help, preferably someone who's been there a good portion of time (think 2-3 years).
Currently, there is a 2 year fleet lock for new FO's with low time (think 2000 and below).
That said, you could apply directly to the E2 jet side of things with about 1500TT.
The normal practice is to hire into YTZ, and transfer people out based on demand, movement, and upgrades.
Anecdotally, it seems that the average is about 6-12 months. You will end up commuting.

Not necessarily? There’s plenty of Q FO’s hired for the outstations. Just looked at the base lists yesterday and based on the seniority numbers there’s no way those FO’s weren’t hired for that base right away. YHZ I’m sure new hires might have to wait for but YOW looks relatively easy to get if you want it, at least for right now.

Porter normally doesn’t do as you say, with 6000 plus hours of king air captain time they haven’t offered me a position to date.Grey_Wolf wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 5:40 am YOW Dash 8 operations has seen some major turnover due to folks leaving for the jet.

I'm not part of the hiring committee, nor training, but *maybe* it's because they do screen for "a good company fit, in line with their company values".Porter normally doesn’t do as you say, with 6000 plus hours of king air captain time they haven’t offered me a position to date.
In other words, your approach and/or attitude during the process may be off-putting to the hiring committee resulting in them passing on your candidacy.

You’re definitely on some sort of black list. I’ve been telling you this for a long time.Happyflyer78 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 7:46 amPorter normally doesn’t do as you say, with 6000 plus hours of king air captain time they haven’t offered me a position to date.Grey_Wolf wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 5:40 am YOW Dash 8 operations has seen some major turnover due to folks leaving for the jet.

You don't need to be on a blacklist.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 11:09 amYou’re definitely on some sort of black list. All you have to do is show up at an interview and flaunt your 6000+ hours in the interviewers' faces as if the interview is just a formality and that they'd be lucky to have you with that experience. Trust me, you'll get the "hell no" before you can start dictating which base and/or equipment you won't do.

Re: Fastest way to YOW
If YOW is your absolute key sticking point. I would apply to porter for any position. Sort out the rest later. Transfers between the Q and the E2 will come. Plus you’ll get that all important seniority number. Porter has highest pay for the Q in comparison to all others across Canada for same type. Tough it out for a couple years. Good things coming.
But, if jazz can give you a Q or E1 rating, you definitely will be attractive in Porter’s eyes lol. (Before I get ransacked for this comment, let’s all be honest and agree that it’s happening….cool)
Re: Fastest way to YOW
This is 100% the plan. I would sweep the floor to get in the door at YOW. No rush to upgrade. Q400 right seat sounds fine to me.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 7:39 amIf YOW is your absolute key sticking point. I would apply to porter for any position. Sort out the rest later.
