Borek questions
i have some questions about ken borek air, and here they are. i've heard about the rotations up north and i believe they're 3 weeks. what happens at the end of those 3 weeks? you get flown back down to calgary and then are you off for a couple weeks before going back up? how do they determine which pilots go to the south pole, the maldives, or any of the other locations? do you bid on them? and my last question is what type of flying is done out of calgary? charter, sched?
take it easy, and safe flying.
thx.

The northern rotations depend on where your based, and what type of plane you fly. They are either 2 week or 3 week rotations, and your flown from either YYC or YEG. During the spring, summer, and fall, when your off your rotation, you probibly wont be asked to work out of YYC. During the winter, you can count on it (if your a beech pilot). We do crew changes and charters out of YYC.
As for getting sent to Mali or the south poll, you have to be a DHC6 pilot.
who gets sent to either places, you just ask, but I'm not sure as I drive a beech.
cheers.

Mali and Antarctica, aside from the obvious geographical diferences, are polar opposites in terms of selection. Generally new hire otter pilots are sent to the Maldives. This gives them a quick hit of Otter and float time (600 hours). After this they are free to ask for other bases. They also leave with a bit of cash since their expenses are low.
First officers for Antarctica have to ask, and generally often. Few first officers get to go down unless they are within a year of an upgrade. Almost no captains go down without a season or two as FO on the Ice. Money is better on the Ice, and there are few places (obviously) to spend it. Generally once someone goes down, they tend to be repeat visitors.
As for the Arctic bases, where you rotate to initially depends on what space is open. most jr pilots tend to be in the same base for a couple quarters before changing around.
