Hip Replacement
Has anyone experienced hip replacement surgery or know of anyone who has with a CAT 1 medical? I have surgery due in a month and just curious what to expect during and after recovery in terms of the medical.

I still have both of my hips so far, but have come across at least two first class pilots that had one of their hips replaced, one as a result of arthritis and the other because of an injury.
Both returned to flying big birds post recovery.
Hip replacements are a dime a dozen these days with complications few and far between post op, and you should be able to return to work without any restrictions whatsoever.
The only thing that you may want to avoid is riding a four legged creature, like a horse, as the risk for a dislocation is ever present.
I think it was North Shore or Lost Lake who mentioned a co-worker who went right back to flying water bombers post surgically as if nothing had ever happened.
Good luck and happy flying,

Re: Hip Replacement
‘Twas me. Probably 10 years ago, now..co-worker fell off a ladder in the off-season, adn had his hip replaced. He was back and at it the next summer. Didn’t seem to be any complications that were noticeable, or that he complained about.. I’d imagine that you’ll lose your medical for ~6 months?
The only wrinkle that he seemed to have is that ‘they’ gave him quite a few more opiate painkillers than he needed/wanted. Said he was really wary of taking them, as he was worried about becoming addicted _ that might be something to keep in mind..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Hip Replacement
Thanks Castorero, North Shore! Appreciate the info. We’ll see how the medical goes next month, fingers crossed. I’m about 6 weeks in post-op and the Surgeon just lifted all restrictions, so hopefully that’ll bode well.
