Hiring Pool

Post by meowernaut »

Howdy,

I interviewed back in November for the YYC Q400 F/O opening. I received an email today informing me that I have been successful and added to a hiring pool. They told me that they were planning 2 GS classes a month in the new year, not sure how accurate that is, but has anyone heard anything differently or gotten a date in the new year?

I received a Jan GS date with my offer. From what I've heard from people the hiring is going to really ramp up in 2024.

Has the starting wage stayed sort of the same, last year there was a bonus, no?

Starting salary is $52.51 * 75 hours a month + $850/mo = ~$4800. You'll probably take home $1500 at the beginning of the month pay cheque and $1800 on the mid month one.

Contract talks are under way and will override the above rate once ratified.

Relatively quick compared to the years it will take to get to 1500 so that you can get your ATPL and upgrade.`

I'm seeing just as many Encore Q's flying in the west as Jazz. How come they do 600+ and Encore only 250?

That's kinda misleading.
I flew ~425 hours as an FO in the first year without picking up any OT, most have done more. I expect this year to be slower but not that slow.

I have spoken to FOs who have gotten a single 4-day and a block of reserve a few times in a row.

Sure, but I doubt that will carry over into the summer months..

EDIT: April scheduling stats out; nah you're right we're f*cked.

I was put in the pool about 6 weeks ago for the FO position. Hoping for some big gains at the bargaining table because my Visa is maxed! With the current salary I’ll be living off of Wonder Bread and weiner water soup! I love being a pilot!

Partially, but more because of the current CA/FO imbalance. Most FOs are flying a bare minimum of hours right now. We were told hiring will be reevaluated on a month-to-month basis going forward.

Meanwhile Jazz is taking in full 20 people classes as per the Jazz thread. Why the big discrepancy?

Because when all you hire is FOs and can't hire/nobody wants to go Captain, you end up having FOs sit around and do nothing... the same will likely happen to Jazz, as the ratio of FOs to CAs continues to grow with every new hire class, unless FOs continue to leave at a steady pace

Probably cuz people still think jazz is the fastest way to AC.

It could be faster once AC hiring slows down provided that flow is actually respected (lol  ). If hiring reduces to the ~100 retirements/year, you could have a higher probability of getting into AC at 30% flow compared to off the street competing against anyone and everyone for the remaining 70 spots. Coming from Jazz, your only competition for those spots would be whatever amount of the ~1250 pilots that are interested in flow. Food for thought. Wasn't part of my decision to join... The folks in my class seemed accutely aware that progress to AC would be slower. It's just an overall decent place to work. With the increased pay, reduced payroll deductions, and the mature ALPA contract, I think it's one of the better regionals to be at IMO. A lot of people aren't interested in AC too. Your resume will look good at Westjet mainline or Transat as well.

Jazz, for all of it's faults, offers long term career potential. They have very experienced captains who will stay at the airline for the rest of their careers.

At Encore, everyone except for 3-5 people, are in line to flow to the jets.

Why everyone on the flow list hasn't put an application in at AC blows my mind. If Jazz is the fast path to WJ and Encore is the fast path to AC what are you doing.

Just want to fly a 737 that bad? Maybe want to continue posting more sad mugshots on Instagram for a couple extra dollars to fly a Q400 for the next 5 years?

Westjet never gave a damn about Encore and everyone including their mother knows if you guys go on strike, which is likely, the flights will just be condensed into 737's. Then what, no body will care.
