Is the Rudder Free and Correct

Post by pelmet »

From TSB.....

C-FAFU, a privately registered Bearhawk Model B taildragger aircraft, was on the landing roll on
runway 06/24 at Smith Falls-Montague (Russ Beach)(CYSH), ON, when the aircraft ground looped
to the left and went off the runway. The aircraft's right main landing gear subsequently collapsed,
and the aircraft came to rest on its right wing. All three occupants exited the aircraft without
reported injuries.
During a subsequent walk around of the aircraft it was noted that the control cables for the rudder
had become disconnected. Pilot/Owner reported that the right rudder pedal was not attached to the
brake system.

To be honest, it is not always easy to tell when doing a control check. The rudder pedals on the Piper Cherokee series don't deflect because of the attachment to the nosegear. Other aircraft make it difficult to see the rudder due to window location or lack of. It can also be difficult to twist around far enough to look. I have used the shadow of the aircraft at times to check. Other times, it seems that it is not an easy thing to do. Perhaps a more detailed inspection with a second person if the aircraft has come out of significant maintenance.

Any other suggestions?
