How are Cdn Airlines going to survive?!

Post by TheOriginalMagicMike »

With a 50% and increasing labor cost competitive advantage...how are Canadian airlines going to survive?!

We all know that the airlines operate on a tight profit margin, but things are getting tight.. with *only* a 50% labor cost advantage...how are they going to survive...

I don’t know, we’ve been brainwashed into believing they couldn’t possibly survive, yet the Americans are still operating at pilot wages in some cases over 500-600/hr, they should all be bankrupt by now, I just don’t understand!

It's because how big Canada is, something something. Same reason why Europe/Asia including Australia can have cell plans for 2-10$/€ meanwhile we have to pay 50+ CAD (only starting last BF/Boxing day plans dropped to 45/40 thanks to Freedom). Or how a flight to Europe is cheaper with a Euro airline vs domestic.

And of course the state helps us a lot by interdicting any competition be it for airlines, teleco, supermarkets or car manufacturers. All they can do is import 2 million TFW and students.

But I just don't understand either!

It's been well established that the major operators in Canada can fully subsidize a normal, globally competitive wage with a 1% increase in fares. 1%. 5 bucks on $500.

Think about that with your vote people. Nobody's going to go bankrupt here by paying the same wages as Ethiopian Air. (Yes, we're told that industry wage parity with a third world country is too much to ask.... )

I think this TA is garbage and should be voted down, but don't just make shit up to try to make your point. Ethiopian 737 captain base pay is $7000 US per month, and 777 captains make $9000 US per month. They also work 20 days a month, and they have to pay an up-front bond of $25000 every time they change aircraft types, which is held for three years and is non-refundable if the pilot is unsuccessful on their ride. Canadian pilots deserve more, but lying and exaggerating loses us support with general public when they find out it's not true.

This! Absolutely this!

I'd like to add that deluding oneself and one's peers doesn't help either in one's fight for better wages...

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Wow, chill out boss, your takeaway is arguing about one point instead of unifying on the other? You did a quick google and took your info from a post on PPrune, since it's almost word for word.

I was speaking with an expat a few years ago who outlined how he was making almost $300k as an equivalent. When you look at the 9k USD for the 737 (2k extra for housing and perdiem) you get $12.4/mo CAD. Buddy said he wasn't paying income tax. (I don't know if that's changed, it might have.)
737 at AC making 220k is bringing home about $10-$11k a month.

I agree that Ethiopia is one of the last places I'd want to work, but you can see the point. Even if the numbers were flipped, the mere fact that a comparison is so close that it has to be laid out speaks volumes in itself! Globally Ethiopian is regarded as a very low, undesirable salary.

We should be on the same side here, and my ass might make many sounds, but I don't talk out of it.
