The whole christmas bonus post got me thinking;
This is only my second christmas at CMA but all we get for a bonus is a huge f@*kin kick in ass. Last year the owners sent out a company wide memo that said merry christmas! How cheap and inpersonel is that. They couldn't cough up enough for cards. This year they aren't even having a Christmas party for the YYC or YVR or YXS bases. They're having a BYOB karaoke party in the YYD hangar though, and if you can find your own way up there you can join in on party. Now why would they have the party in YYD when their main/largest bases are in YYC and YVR....Oh of coarse it in Smithers thats where the owner and head guys are.
Now am I being petty? Is this the indusrty standard?
I'm not saying I want much; a hand shake and a thank you for your year of fly my ass off and a holiday wish to me and my family would do me.....COME ON!....Not even a christmas party so everyone can get out, away from the work atmosphere....something...anything is better then waiting tilll the Dec 24 to find out your employer doesn't care about you! Now that really wants me to work hard this coming year.
Times aren't that tough at CMA loads are picking up charters are picking up.....there has to be some spare money for christmas cards.
Why it's elementary my dear sky's the limit, because they are cheap phuckz like many in the industry.
tincanflyer a close friend from one of your bases showed me the 2004 memo/thanks4nuttin card (at least I think it was), yeah really classy. I'm sure this penny pinching exists outside of Central Mountain, take my employer for instance, and it hurts just the same. You work all year and sacrifice for a company trying to save money for them where you can and then they won't even attempt to show their gratitude for your effort.
I've met some of your "bad boys" from YYD/YYC and frankly I'm not all that surprised, best you can hope for is that Jacob Marley drops his chains on their feet.
Siiting here with the guys. We want you to know we agree with your assessment of the cheap company. We think you should get the other pilots who feel the same way and march right in and quit...that will teach them.....oh, and by the way, could you give us the contact numbers for your HR department.
Why do you take your job so seriously then? I can understand your frustration, working so hard and not recieving much of a thanks. We've all been there. But this is all the more reason for you to play the same game! This isn't your mom and pop operation where their succes as a business rides on your effort and skill, it's a faceless company/corporation. Although they have the same legal rights as any human, they don't have emotions. They won't miss you if you take all your legal sick days off, max out your benefits (if you get any), or take other similar shortcuts. What's the harm, thier bottome line? Big deal! They're too cheap for you anyways, why should you care?
I'm not saying don't become an idiot employee, but don't go all-out either! The strongest horse gets the whip, ALL-THE-TIME! So relax, enjoy where your at, but keep your eyes open for an outfit that'll treat you right!
Tin Can: I think your memory of last year is a little hazy. Yes there was a company wide merry christmas memo. But the company also paid for a christmas party in yyd last year, a party that more than 100 people attended at a bar in yyc and shared the cost with NT for a party at the hangar in yvr. This year, they are having a party at the country club in yyd, complete with dinner and drinks. There may also be a yyc christmas party again this year except that nobody in yyc has had time to organize it so it may wait until january. YVR is also having a christmas party this year. So sounds like the christmas spirit isn't completely dead at CMA. There are definately parties. Maybe if you weren't so bitter, people would invite you....

LoL... That's the worst, wasn't that a simpsons episode,
"that milhouse he didn't even have a party, oh well, here ya go buddy"
"thanks bart"
"great party milhouse"
"yeah great party"

Are you f#$%ing serious? You must be one of the 250 hr wonders that got on there who's only previous job experience was working at Safeway. I suppose Jake and the gang threw you a great x-mas party while you were attending college at Costal Pacific in YXX last year. Do you also get your back up when the captain asks you to pull the plane out of the hangar on a rainy morning, because "that's not your job, and they should call in an engineer" to do it? Personally, I've attended some great parties while at CMA, some years we all got great gifts (leather jackets), some years nothing more than a memo. If that's all you have to cry about, I think you're doing ok. If it's that important to you, why don't you and the boys get yourselves down to the Beaver or Kaleas and invite Lindsay and Doug down from YYD to say thanks to them for providing you with a decent job where you don't have to even get your hands dirty? Get a grip!

Well said I'm tired of the whiney pre-madonnas in this industry they all seam to be the Co Pac geeks that were promised a 747 but had to settle for a beech 1900 oh poor you, so sad to bad. Merry Fucking Christmas
I can't make it either of YYD/YVR Christmas party this year but CMA is paying for both of the parties. and the lady who's organizing party in YVR phoned us yesterday about the party that CMA is sponsoring.
Ahh who cares about a Christmas party really anyway? But the CMA approach takes the cake for bad employee PR that's for sure. Throw a party, pay for it, and make it 600 miles away from 80% of your employees. I thought it was supposed to be "no special treatment for any employee group" or some such stuff, as to why we wouldn't negotiate jumpseat agreements with other airlines because that would "only benefit the pilots".
Still waiting for the annual memo asking whether or not I'd like to contribute to a Christmas gift for you know who and you know who too. Ya I'll get right on that....not!
I'll cut them a break though, most of the pilots will be gone by this time next year while the head office staff up in YYD has for the most part been there for many, many years and if anyone is gonna get a party its them. Merry Christmas everyone, party or not!

HAHAHA!......I forgot about that!......why don't D & L contribute to a Christmas gift for all of the staff!
Canada the arm pit of aviation!!! Why so suprised? Go overseas young man!!! You may not be treated any better but at least youll make good money. there is always options. Asia is growing, new companies starting left right and centre.
Make me laugh how in Canada everyone gets excited about a new company starting with a Navajo or Be02, here in Asia its 747 etc.. Like I said get your ass down here. All the copmanies are hiring like crazy!!!
Tincan,
You're making way too big a deal about this. Calgary had a party the last 2 yrs at least, and we probably would have had one this year if the woman who organized it hadn't left. YOU coulda taken the reins and got it done....
No employer owes you a thing for Christmas except your next paycheck. The attitudes of entitlement by some here are the very reason many employers have dropped parties, bonuses, etc. They aren't seen as something special or a gift, rather as something owed. Any inconsistancy from one year to the next, or one employee to the next is complained about and causes a drop in morale.
If you want a Christmas party form a staff committee, do some fund raising through the year, and organize it yourselves. As Christmas nears, then approach the employer about the company kicking in some dollars to help subsidize the ticket price and hit up suppliers for gift donations. Make a Christmas party something the entire staff group does for themselves, not something somebody else owes you.
I agree that no company owes anyone anything extra at Xmas.
However, you do have to admit that things like above standard benefits, company sponsored staff events, bonuses, etc. are proportional and related to company moralle, employee retention, and therefore, the bottom line.

22k a year, that's so far below the poverty line it's not even funny, how about a christmas bonus cheque so you don't have to go to the Sally Ann for your xmas dinner or the food bank before a flight - dressed in your big time pilot uniform ! Good question on the thread, since when is a xmas party held on Jan 21 a xmas party - why not just call it a big piss up, partly funded by cma - for no real rhyme or reason?
