Are you a colour blind commerical pilot- Help wanted!

Post by ols500 »

Hello,

I'm unsure if im allowed to make this post as its asking for donations/ new members, but the organisation so small, I'm trying to get as many people involved as I can. Despite it being small to those who are affected it can ruin their dreams completly :(

I'm a charter pilot in Canada, flying King airs. Something I never thought was possible due to my colour vision. I immigrated from England to Canada to do this as England is more strict on the colour vision laws to obtain a Class I medical. I'm alone out here, away from my family, its not nice, but I'm loving the flying, one day I would like to return home. My goal is to prevent any other young guys having to leave their friends and family behind just to achieve their dream. Its not fair, we fly the same planes in both countries and operate to the same standards. I know many pilots keep medical "issues" a secret, in fear people will judge them, but I have been very open about this and encounted no issues flying safely.

I'm apart of an organisation called the ECDAA (The European Colour Deficient Aircrew Association) and I'm only encouraging current commerical pilots here who suffer from colour deficiency to make a small donation, $10, that would be £5 when entered in the donation side of the website. You guys have your jobs now, the lucky few to be colour deficent but still able to obtain that medical, Imagine all the young guys out there with the same dream! Its not the same country, but you will understand that amazing feeling when you finallly got an unrestricted class I, yet you had failed the "coloured dots" test. The foundation aims to change the law across the UK and Europe. Theres not many of us, so please reach out.

Also, just joining our team helps alot. We are in a fight against government officals who have never flown an aircraft and think they "know best".

Kind regards, Oliver Seaward.

Here is my take and understanding on colour vision tests / requirements by TC. If you fail the doctor administered test, you then go on to proceed to get a lantern test. If you pass the lantern test, it goes on your file and you will never get the test administered again. Theoretically colour vision does not deteriorate over time. The reason the test is normally conducted with each medical is it can be a precursor to determination of type II diabetes, or so it was explained to me by my CAME. Frankly, don't see what the fuss is...
