Electric Float Pump

Post by bwgbartley »

Anyone out there have success with electric float pumps? I found this from Milwaukee that looks like it could be adapted for a float pump. Not sure if it needs to be submerged to prime itself or if it would draw the water up from the floats?

Thoughts? Thanks, Brian

That Milwaukee is a submersible pump, so it's not going to be particularly happy if you tried to adapt it for use as a float pump.

If you've got so much water in your floats that you need a gas or electric pump, maybe it's time to get those puppies out of the water and get them sealed up...

I always looked at pumping floats as the penalty you had to pay for having so much fun flying them!

just curious, why do you want ECM control of the electric waterpump?

and if so, why not just use the fuel pump relay to trigger a second relay if you only want it on when the engine is running? although youd get a prime cycle, that shouldnt be a big deal...

its a cool project, just curious

I worked for one place where something like that would have come in real handy ha ha. A good workout in the am is great stress relief! When you have to continue those workouts in the afternoon it gets to be a bit much. ;).

How tight an operator keeps their floats is usually a good indicator of the maintenance on the rest of the aircraft.

Many amphibious floats, ie. Wipline 10000 on the FireBoss, etc., have electric bilge pumps. Operated automatically by “ water in float” sensors. I once flew a PA-20 on Edo 2000’s that had windshield washer motors installed in each compartment. Looked kind of funny watching the water stream out as part of the pre flight. Were collectively operated by a switch on the panel.

I use a Dewalt drill and a drill operated water pump I bought at Canadian Tire. Works well plus I alway need a drill for something anyway.

I realize I'm resurrecting a dead thread but anyone who comes across this thread looking for an answer, here it is.

The operation I'm at has two of these, with garden hose siliconed to a cut up float plug to get it into the floats. Works like a charm for pumping out 5+ aircraft every morning!

Yes, electric float pumps can be quite effective, depending on the setup. The Milwaukee pump you mentioned likely needs to be primed or submerged initially to create a suction, but once it's running, it should be able to pull water from the floats as long as there’s a consistent water source. However, check the specs to confirm if it’s self-priming. If it’s not self-priming, you may need to manually prime it or place it low enough so water can flow into it by gravity. Also, consider the pump’s flow rate and pressure to ensure it meets your needs.
