Help Identifying Vintage Propeller

Post by DHC-1 Jockey »

I have a vintage propeller and I am trying to identify the type of aircraft it might have been used on and what time period it comes from.

The stamp states CANADIAN VICKERS - SCHWARZ FINISH - LIMITED MONTREAL. There are a few other words under "SCHWARZ FINISH" but I can't make them out. There used to be a data plate on one side of the hub but it's missing. Based on Wikipedia, the company existed from 1911 through 1944.

It's solid wood with a fixed pitch. Total length is 84.5" and the hub diameter is 9.5". It also has a brass/copper leading edge.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The short, broad blades look like what you’d see on an Anson. The counterclockwise (from behind) rotation also suggests Anson.

Could be an early Anson with British Cheetah engine.

Appreciate the responses.

Is the "Schwarz Finish" the black coating on the prop? I assume it's some sort of wearable coating to protect the wood underneath?

I wanna say that because of what looks like a large hub prop, it could be fixed to a multi engined airplane, most likely with counter rotating props.

Fleet16b is the guy to reach out to, he deals in vintage aircraft 24/7, though I haven't seen him post in about a year.

It’s almost certainly off a Cheetah-powered Anson and would have been made roughly in the early forties. Next time I’m at the hangar I’ll try and remember to measure one of the Anson props I have in there.

I don’t think the Cheetah Ansons saw much if any use in civil hands after the war so the props held no value other than as wall-hangers. Imagine the number of spares the RCAF must have stocked that would now never be needed in service to anyone. They’re a satisfyingly beefy prop though and look great over a fireplace or doorway. Most Anson props I see are S&S but I suspect that’s a regional thing as there would have been a handful of prop makers across the country.

Its definitely an English made prop as it turns opposite to NAmerican props
Don’t think it was used on the Cheetah powered Avro Anson Mk 1 as they had Fairey Reed metal props
